EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

What do employers look for in a cover letter?

  1. “Your cover letter might not always be the first thing I look at, but if your application doesn’t have one you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage.” Read the application criteria carefully and do all that the employer is asking you to do!
  2. “Keep it brief” The purpose of a cover letter is to offer the person reviewing it a taster of who you are, your potential fit for the position and encourages them to review your resume to learn more about you.
  3. “Get to the Point” The opening sentence of your first paragraph should include your most relevant qualifications and your objective. Show the employer right from the opening why you are a good fit for the role.
  4. “Don’t just regurgitate your resume.” Your cover letter should give the reader the impression you understand the company and the position you are applying for, and concise and specific information about your suitability to the role.
  5. “Know who you are talking to” When given the information – use it. Read the position description in full, often application details are outlined at the end and address your application accordingly.
