Year 8 Adviser Report

As always, there has been a lot happening this term. Year 8 students participated in their annual Wellbeing Day. This year, students were lucky enough to partake in a workshop on global citizenship delivered by High Resolves. This workshop encouraged students to think beyond their own world and consider the widespread implications of individual actions. Also during this day, students attended workshops based on anti-bullying, managing screen time. The day concluded with physical activity and the most amazing game of dodgeball ever seen! Thank you to Mrs Smith, Mr Mellish, Miss Searle and Miss Perkins for their enthusiastic assistance on the day.

Earlier this term, Year 8 were privileged to receive a talk from NSW Police. I would like to thank Senior Constable Rebecca Armitage who discussed the many issues that young people face around social media. It was very informative for the students who asked many insightful questions to clarify their understanding of the law and the pitfalls around social media usage.

We have had many Year 8 students step into leadership positions around the school. Congratulations to our SRC representatives: Kasm Al Rubayi, Alydia Dumpert and Alexander McGavin. We also have Skyla Bedford, Seth Beaman, Nixon Dunn, Samantha Edwards-McCallan, Kaylee Kaczmarczyk, Lachlan Knowles, Ashlee Lane, Ernest Leseberg, Max Lewry and Charlotte Wade who have been elected as House Captains. I look forward to seeing their leadership skills prosper.

A friendly reminder of the importance of organisation for students. All assessment tasks are to be completed by the due date and should demonstrate the students’ best effort. The use of a diary or calendar is highly recommended to reduce stress. Students should also be regularly referring to the Assessment Schedule booklet that was issued during Term 1.

It was pleasing to see so many Year 8 students and parents attend our Stage 5 Elective Subject Information Evening earlier this term. All Year 8 students have now selected their elective subject preferences for Year 9 through our online system. Students will be informed as to which elective subjects they will be studying during Term 4.

Our Vivo champions for Term 3 were Linden Barber, Alexander McGavin and Jaidyn Waldron-Lamotte. Congratulations on your consistently positive behaviour!

Enjoy the holidays and stay safe.

Year 10 Adviser Report

As Term 3 comes to a close it is difficult to know where to start in documenting all of the fabulous activities Year 10 have been involved in. Firstly though academically, Year 10 students have had some amazing achievements and I have enjoyed hearing from their teachers about the high quality of work they have produced. As Term 4 commences it is very important for students to maintain this effort as they will be completing exams in most subjects for their first formal school qualification – the ROSA or Record of School Achievement.

Individually I would like to congratulate the newly elected SRC members – Imogen Street and Gianne Briones, as well as the House Captains, Brandon Willmette, Mackenzie Waterhouse, Caitlyn Tyndall, David Hong, Bridie Lennon, Jamie Renton, Claire Norris and Jayden Downes.  Special mention also needs to go to outgoing SRC member Stephanie Peterson, who has been an amazing SRC rep and who epitomises what it means to be a leader, showing dedication, organisation and a willingness to be involved in all school activities. Congratulations on a job well done and our thanks go to Steph for all of her efforts. Congratulations also to Archie Tebbutt for his Bronze Medallion in the 1500m Racewalk at CHS Athletics. Well done Archie!

Year 10  have been fortunate to have been involved in a raft of activities which contribute to their personal development, mental health, leadership and career development. The High Resolves day was very well received and students demonstrated their ability to think critically about their community and the future they would like to see. ‘Minute to Win It’ was a fun 2 hours where the students worked as a team to achieve a number of silly tasks. The day culminated in a presentation from Janine McKenzie, Executive Manager for Transformation and Business Performance. Janine is a former student who talked about her interesting career background and her role as a recruiter for Central Coast Council. She was able to give the students some great insights into the interview process.

SALSA has been a highly successful program and the Yr 10 SALSA leaders have progressed with their tasks of bringing about uniform change and the introduction of water fountain at the bottom of the school to encourage choosing water as a drink. The B Street Smart excursion was extremely valuable with students getting the opportunity to get the road safety message in a very engaging but confronting way from first responders, victims and family of road crashes.

Finally students have all received their subject selections for 2020. If there are any problems please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs James or myself. During the Stage 6 Preparation Program students will get the opportunity to get a taste of their subjects – following their Year 11 timetable for one week. As there are many outside providers involved in this program please ensure payment has been made to the office.  Finally at the end of next term the annual Year 10 Dinner Dance will be held at Coast Bar and Grill. Information will be sent out during the term. Have an enjoyable and safe end of term break

Year 12 Adviser Report

Year 12 have completed their final week at Henry Kendall High School and I would like to congratulate each and every one of them for their individual effort.

During the term, Year 12 sat their trial examinations which gave them a true experience of what the HSC will be like in a month’s time. The feedback for many was extremely positive and a reflection on the hard work and study. It was also a learning experience for others who can now identify areas for improvement and apply themselves with consistency as they lead toward the HSC exams.

We have also seen the incredible talent displayed by our Visual Art, Design and Technology Timber, Extension History and Society and Culture students at the VISTAS display. Year 12 can be extremely proud of the work they have produced. I was blown away by the creativity and critical thinking shown throughout each work.

I would also like to congratulate Pasan Sembapperuma won first place in the 17-18 years division at the 25th Annual Central Coast Secondary Chess Competition. Excellent work Pasan!

I urge Year 12 to set a reminder on their calendar for the Year 12 formal payments. The final date for payment is 19 October, however, it is recommended that students pay their $110 to the front office before this date. Remember, your whole table must be paid before you can submit a table formation request. After 19 October, the ticket numbers will be collated and invites printed for students, partners and parents attending. Remember, you must pay at the office and ensure all books are handed back to the library before any tickets are issued.

As the final week occurs, I would like to remind Year 12 to stay safe and think about their actions. This is an exciting time, however, the HSC is yet to come. You deserve to enjoy your final week but ensure a detailed and planned study guide is followed during the holiday period. Please review course notes across each course and apply this knowledge to past papers. A significant component of your HSC results are yet to be created and the time and energy you dedicate to your learning is paramount. Please remember your teachers, Mrs James and myself are available to support you at any time. The library is also a space for you to go and work.

Year 12, I am extremely proud to be your Year Adviser and I look forward to the exciting celebrations ahead.
