Term 3 PDHPE Report
Term 3 in PDHPE has been about extracurricular activities and the wonderful opportunities that the students have had outside the classroom – Here is a brief snapshot.
Ski Trip
A huge thankyou to Mrs Starkey, Mr Mellish, Miss Imer and Miss Searle for the organisation of the annual ski trip to Thredbo. Students in Year’s 9, 10 and 11 who attended this trip will no doubt be able to reflect on this experience as one of their best as a Henry Kendall student. The feedback from all staff has been extremely positive and I would like to congratulate all the students who attended.
Year 10
Driver Awareness bstreetsmart Excursion
On Wednesday 11 September Mrs Starkey, Miss Sexty, and Mr Wright took 60 Year 10 students to Qudos Bank Arena for the bstreetsmart Driver Awareness excursion. bStreetsmart is an inspiring initiative from the Trauma Service at Westmead Hospital. Students are exposed to a live crash scene and hear first accounts from survivors of road trauma. In addition, students have the opportunity to visit a wide range of interactive displays from the NSW Fire and Ambulance Service, L Trent and Red Cross just to name a few.
The purpose of the bstreetsmart is to reduce the fatality and injury rates of young people by promoting safe behaviour as drivers, riders and passengers.
The feedback from the staff and students has been extremely positive and we look forward to organising the excursion again in 2020.
Sun Safety Ambassador Program
On Wednesday 4 September three students in Year 9 (Abbey Welsby, Josh Emms and Harmony Day) attended the Sun Safety Ambassador Program at Newcastle High School which was conducted by the Melanoma Institute. The purpose of the day was to learn about the dangers of melanoma as well as the skills necessary to deliver an action plan when returning to school.
Abbey, Josh and Harmony will be delivering their action plan to the school on Friday 27 September at the Celebration Assembly and we look forward to hearing their message about Melanoma.
House Captains
House Captains for 2020 have been elected and we look forward to seeing their innovation and ideas in their new role. Weekly house captain meetings have started and students are sharing their ideas about a range of issues. We look forward to seeing their progress as they start officially in Term 4.
A huge thank you must go to the outgoing House Captains – We hope that this role has given you an insight into student voice and student leadership at Henry Kendall High School.
Let’s Move at Lunch Time
Miss Perkins and the GRIP Leaders have introduced the Let’s Move at Lunch Time initiative. Each Wednesday at lunchtime in term 3 our GRIP leaders have facilitated touch football, soccer, volleyball and basketball for our student body. This has been a fantastic initiative, as it has enabled students to play an organised game of sport in a non-threatening and safe environment. Each week student numbers have increased and it’s great to see so many students participating and having fun.
Let’s hope this initiative can continue in Term 4.
Knockout Sport
This term we have had two teams participate in the Sydney North Knockout competition with two teams representing Henry Kendall High School.
The Open Boys cricket team put up a spirited effort against Pennant Hills High School but were unfortunately defeated by 7 wickets. Well done to all of the students that travelled on the train to Sydney for this game and thanks to Mr Mellish for organising the team.
The Open Girls Netball team also put up a spirited effort against Tumbi Umbi, however they unfortunately were defeated in their game. Well done to all the girls that attended and a huge thanks to Miss Sexty for organising.
