What happens to the food we eat?

At the end of Term 2, the Year 10 Food class were called on to examine the digestive process using a Digestive Replica Experiment.  This exercise  employs different materials and tools that replicate the journey of our food from ingestion to excretion - so it is often called Making Poo !

While running the various stages of the process, students were required to:

  • Hypothesise what the food will look like at each stage
  • Draw, take pictures or describe what the food looks like as you are conducting the experiment
  • Briefly describe what happens at each stage and identify what processes are chemical digestion and which are mechanical digestion.

As you can see from our photos, this practical class gives rise to a lot of conversation as well as laughter - lots of cries of  'Uughh!' and 'Eewww!' - and  that is exactly why this was a very powerful lesson!  By replicating the information that they had learned,  students not only reinforced their learning,  but enjoyed the lesson even more.

Hands-on learning can be a fabulous tool for motivating

our students and  sparking their imagination!
