Geography provides students with opportunities to develop skills and knowledge to navigate the 21st century.

Students extend their understanding of the world through tasks including problem-solving, assessing sustainability, analysing change and examining interconnections.  Students explore their local, national and global context and are encouraged to think about their place in the world.  Geography continues to be a popular subject choice for VCE students at BSC.

Australian Geography Competition

Brunswick Secondary College Students blitzed the Australian Geography Competition again!

The Australian Geography Competition is a contest for Australian secondary school students, assessing their geographical knowledge and skills. The Competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence.

Maddison Panozzo
Maddison Panozzo

Humanities teacher, Maddison Panozzo, was selected as one of only six teachers to be involved in the Geography Teachers Association TeachLive program. Ms. Panozzo undertook a research trip in Moreton Bay in partnership with Earthwatch and Science Under Sail.

The trip involved collecting seagrass samples, analysing video data of the sea life and examining sediment samples. This data contributes to the Healthy Waterways program. Healthy Waterways is a not-for-profit NGO dedicated to ensuring that scientific knowledge and understanding is applied to the management of South East Queensland waterways.

Maddison created a blog to discuss her experiences (click HERE) with her Year 7 Humanities classes. She also video-called her class to demonstrate the seagrass collection process.

This trip was a valuable professional development program as Maddison developed her fieldwork skills and extended her content knowledge of the complex urban and natural environment of Brisbane and Moreton Bay.  Furthermore, it provided opportunities to share ideas and work collaboratively to effectively integrate the fieldwork into her students’ learning.
