Karen Harris

Principal

We were honoured early this term to have Bruce Armstrong, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Education and Training (DET) and Jeanette Nagorcka, Regional Director of the North West Metropolitan Region visit our school recently.  We were one of three schools selected  in the Hume/Moreland Network for the visits, chosen because of our work on literacy.

Max Cardamone and Oscar Coopes (Year 7) explained the innovation they  had developed for the Innovations Expo and the process they went through in Science, English and Mathematics classes to produce their final product, pitch and pricing.  Jess Sartori (BSC Head of Science and eLearning Coordinator) and Rohan McCarthy (Head of English and Literacy Leader) then explained the thinking behind the design of the assessment task and the opportunities for cross-disciplinary planning and assessment.

The guests also had the opportunity to observe part of a Year 11 Chemistry class, taught by Nick Kemp.  Nick is one of the BSC teachers who is part of the Multi-Literacies in Secondary School Science project - a research project being conducted by Australian Catholic University with four secondary schools.  Anne-Marie Lynzaat who teaches in the Brunswick English Language Centre and who is a principal investigator for the project, explained the literacy interventions that Nick was using whilst discussing chemical reactions with his students.

It was indeed an honour to host Bruce and Jeanette and to hear their commendation on the educational leadership Brunswick Secondary College is displaying.

Performing Arts

Congratulations again to all who were involved in the school production of Grease.  It was a phenomenal showcase of talent by the performers, musicians and backstage crew and expertly led by Tracie Eastwood, Kathleen McGuire, Tim Roach and Emily Palekis.

Continuing the performance season, our Performing Arts Gala was a very entertaining  evening that showcased the many and varied talents of over 100 BSC Performing Arts students.

There were outstanding performances by solo artists and ensembles across each of these disciplines and I congratulate them on rightfully earning their place on stage in the Gala.

Congratulations and thank you to the significant number of students and staff  who, led by Stage Manager, Tracie Eastwood, supported the various teachers involved in the event. Their efforts ensured that the event ran as smoothly and seamlessly as possible. Working in the darkness, their skill at preparing the stage for each item meant that the item changes were more expedient than ever before and the  performers could concentrate on performing at their best.

Well done to everybody on a fabulous team effort!

2018 - an exciting year ahead

Brunswick Secondary College offers a quality teaching and learning experience within the curriculum  and beyond the classroom with our rich co-curricular program.  Grade 6 students and families are rightly excited about being offered a place at our school for 2018, with these offers having been made to primary school students recently.  We look forward to welcoming these new students to our school and know that the wider school community will do the same.

Our school will soon be supported with our new teaching spaces with the H block (Food classrooms, kitchens and canteen) and D block (Dance, Drama, Music) still on schedule to be completed by the end of the year, ready for 2018.   We reached a significant milestone this week as the roof on H Block was installed, with workers enjoying perfect conditions for this job.

We will soon be commencing building works in F block, starting with Science classroom renovation.

2018 Curriculum information

Thank you to parents who have attended recent information nights pertaining to 2018 subject selections, early entry VCE and/or VTAC courses.

Over the next few weeks students from Years 8 to 11 will submit their subject preferences which will enable us to decide on the number of classes which will run in 2018 and to consider our staffing needs.  There will be updated information relating to decisions made on classes running in 2018 communicated through the Compass parent portal for each year level.

We look forward to supporting students through the subject selection process.   Our advice to students is not to speculate on what classes may  or may not run  based on past history . Instead, be sure to select a subject  if it is a subject that the students wishes to study

Information relating to subjects and timelines can be found on our website, through the Learning tab.  I encourage students and families to contact our new careers teacher, Veronika Khatountseva, if you have any questions or would like an appointment before selections are due.

Finally,  I heartily congratulate all the brave students who participated in Chatterbox 2018.

BSC's very own public speaking competition, held just last week, provided another fabulously entertaining evening as well as an excellent avenue for Student Voice.

All the students (ranging from Year 7 to Year 12) prepared incredibly well for the competition, speaking with confidence and passion to a most appreciative audience.

Congratulations to you all and many thanks to Marianne Hicks (Public speaking & Debating Coordinator) and Antonio Cowell (2018 Public Speaking & Debating Captain) who staged the event so well.
