As students move through Senior School, their choice of subjects take on more relevance in terms of their education pathway.

Our Year 10 students recently selected the subjects they would like to undertake in 2018. To help them feel as informed as possible,

There is a wide range of subjects on offer in the Senior School, including the option of undertaking a VCAL pathway, so to help students feel as informed as possible there a number of ways we support them.

Our Careers Counsellor, teachers and Year Level Coordinators are always available to discuss a student's options with them, but BSC also runs a comprehensive program of advice to help our students make informed, appropriate decisions.

COGS & Careers

At BSC, our Careers Counsellor is very busy across the year levels providing information and advice. All students are welcome to visit Veronika Khatountseva during recess, lunchtimes or after school to discuss their aspirations and BSC's role in helping them to achieve these goals. Throughout the year, a number of programs are run to help students with this process.

Click HERE to visit our website for further information.

The BSC COGS (Community Opportunity Growth Success) Program incorporates significant information for the current Year 10 students on the topic  of career choices,  presenting advice and processes for selection of VCE/VCAL/VET pathways and VCE subjects. Again, this program is driven by our Careers Counsellor, refreshing their skills and introducing students to a number of tools that can assist them in choosing an education pathway, such as MIPsOnline.

The Year 10 Work Experience Program provides BSC students the opportunity to get a taste of life in the workplace.  Students take this chance to follow what their pathway might be - and a huge variety of companies and organisations also get the benefit of hosting a BSC student!

Year 11 2018 Subject Expo

Each year, Year 10 students and families are invited to the Subject Expo to speak with teachers about various subject choices and the post-school pathways for these disciplines.  This event plays a key role in helping students understand the best way to approach subject choice.   As our pictures show, this event is informal and enjoyable, with many BSC teachers sharing their knowledge and experience to help our students understand how different subjects fit into the education pathways.  A student perspective is also very helpful, and we are lucky that so many Year 11 and 12 students volunteer their time to attend the expo so they can talk directly to Year 10s about their experience of undertaking a particular subject.

An Information evening is also held for Year 10 students and parents where they can hear about the expectations of Senior School, more detail about VCE and VCAL, and the subject selection process.

Year 11 Information Night

Year 11 2018 Subject Expo and Information Night

Careers Advice

Armed with information they collect at the Expo and Information Night, students can investigate where different subjects can lead them. For example, they may have an interest in Physics and need to know what its study could lead them to - both in tertiary education and the workforce. Alternately, they may have their heart set on a particular career, but need guidance on how to reach their goal. Our Careers Counsellor has extensive knowledge of tertiary courses and can access and supply current and relevant information about available tertiary courses. Veronika Khatountseva is at the school from Monday-Thursday and can be contacted by ringing the school on 9387 6133 or via email on Khatountseva.Veronika.V@edumail.vic.gov.au

Subject Selection Advice

Following the Information night, Year 10 students meet on an individual basis with members of the Senior School Team: Assistant Principal Heather Secomb, Senior School Leader Sarah Meads, and Year 10 Coordinator Jay Mason. Parents/guardians are also welcome to attend this session. At these appointments, subject choices, report information and teacher recommendations are discussed.

This process – of COGS sessions, followed by the Subject Expo, Information night and Subject Selection Appointments will also soon be undertaken by our Year 9 students, in preparation for Year 10.
