Middle Years

I would like to congratulate our students and all the myPEC Mentors for the wonderful start to the year. It has been a delight to see the new Year 6 and Year 7 students looking so at ease in their new environment. Both year levels are transitioning very well, and quickly adjusting to the challenges presented. Our Year 8 students have settled into the school routine. It is evident through my daily interactions that the students in myPEC are friendly, respectful and caring young people, and I feel very honoured to be able to be a part of their education. I would like to congratulate all students on a positive start to the year.

Managing Devices:

MyPEC embraces technology and we introduced the IPad Programme which enhances innovation and creativity in the classroom. This year our Year 7 and 8 students are continuing to use iPads and the Year 6 students are using school owned laptops that will remain at school.

The iPad/laptop are a wonderful learning tools; however, students need to manage themselves so they are not distracted by their device. Students have responsibility to use their devices effectively, and if this is not being done we can work with parents and Mentors to set up iPad Agreements which increase student accountability.

Managing the devices is essential, and here are a few tips:

  • We recommend close supervision by parents during homework. Is your child working effectively or wasting time on their iPad? Is your child receiving snapchat or messenger notifications while they are studying? Turn off notifications as this will reduction distractions. Remember, you don’t need to reply to messages.
  • Students cannot effectively multi task and we recommend complete focus on one task at a time rather than ineffectively switching from task to task. Focus attention will improve learning outcomes for all students.
  • Remove game apps from iPads if students are overly dependent on the games.
  • Students are not to use social media apps (Facebook, Snapchat, Messenger) while at school, as this can be disruptive.
  • During the evening, it is important that students switch off their iPad/computer an hour before they go to bed. The blue light interferes with sleep patterns, and reduces the melatonin (the hormone that increases in the afternoon that helps us sleep). Students can use the Night Shift or f.lux, which is a yellow light screen that is available on their device.
  • If parents have any concerns, they are encouraged to talk to their child’s mentor.
