Teaching and Learning
A number of Year 9 classes have been selected to take part in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) – Field Trial. TIMSS is an important educational research project investigating student achievement in mathematics and science. More than 60 countries, including Australia, are participating in this study. TIMSS is an important activity to keep us, as parents and citizens, informed about how our students in Australia are performing in comparison to their peers in other countries and to compare programs of study and teaching practices. We will be able to obtain current national and international information which will help improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and science in our country.
TIMSS is endorsed by educational authorities nationally and Australian schools are randomly selected for the programme. Selected schools provide general details of their student cohort and further selections of those to be tested are made by the testing organisation. The College is pleased to be selected to contribute to this programme this year.
Selected students will do an assessment in mathematics and science and complete a questionnaire about their experiences at home and school. There is no need for students to study specifically for the assessment as it will not affect individual students’ grades or progress in school.
All data will be kept strictly confidential and no individual student or school will be identified in published data or reports.
The testing will take place in March.

Game One of the Australian Stock Exchange Sharemarket Game is open for registrations. Students receive a virtual $50,000 they can invest over a 10 week period, in 220 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market so this is as close to real life share trading as you can get. Students can enter individually or as part of a syndicate. The person or syndicate who earns the highest amount in the ten week trading period can win up to $600.
It is a great way to learn about share trading without losing money. If you would like to register please e-mail Mr Clare with your details; you do not have to be enrolled in Accounting or Business Management to enter. Registrations must be received by March 7; trading begins on March 8.
