More importantly, you can talk with academics, lecturers and current students about what certain courses are actually like and what is required to get into them. Year 10 Careers Activities Week
Last week we held our inaugural week of activities for all our Year 10 Students. This was a great opportunity to experiment and learn about different professional contexts. The driving purpose of Activities Week is to allow age-appropriate professional exploration.
The students participated in a combination of activities commencing with our Subject Expo. Students were able to meet with the different subject teachers to discuss the subject in detail so they can make informed choices. They also had the chance to hear from our current Years 11 and 12 students about their experiences in the Diploma and, more importantly, to ask questions.
The students participated in a professional entrepreneurial workshop 'The Apprentice Challenge', with the team from Project Gen Z, where they designed a product including creating a marketing plan and a 30 second advertising campaign. Each student took on a different role in their group including CEO, Graphic Design, Marketing, Social Media, actor, camera, editor and presenter. This was not a workshop to learn specific sales techniques or business skills per se; it was a workshop for students to develop their critical thinking skills, work collaboratively in teams, take on specific roles and share and develop ideas to present to a wider audience. Each group came up with exceptional products and concepts and it was encouraging to see students, who may not have ordinarily done so, challenge themselves by taking on the role of CEO and presenter.
The important highlights of the week were the three Certificate courses: Barista, Food Safety Handling and First Aid. These courses will provide essential foundation employability skills that will prepare students with skills, qualifications and knowledge for jobs that can support educational pursuits and chosen career pathways as well as obtain flexible or permanent sources of income to assist them to transition from student to paid or voluntary workforce participation and develop valuable transferable skills that they can apply to any workplace.
New Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence will commence in 2020

Future Skills Framework 2030 - FYA
"Australia is not equipped with the skills for the future of work"
"In the rapidly changing world of work Australia’s long-term economic growth will be reliant on an adequately skilled and educated workforce. FYA’s research provides strong evidence that our current and future workers are finding the transition to full-time work more challenging and feel they lack the right skills. Our ageing population means older Australians are leaving the workforce in larger numbers than young people can replace them and skill shortages are costing the economy."
"FYA’s Future Skills Framework 2030 outlines how Australian governments can work with young people, industry, educational institutions and leading thinkers across the country to move from talk to action, proposing four key things:
1. A National Future Skills Symposium - to identify a pathway to ensuring young people get the skills they need.
2. A digital platform for future career insights - that provides young people with localised information on the jobs available and the skills they need.
3. Enterprise and work-integrated learning initiatives - that provide relevant and immersive enterprise education and meaningful paid work experience.
4. An ongoing Future Skills research program -young people will need re-skilling due to automation."

Parent and Caregivers Guide to University
This one is courtesy of Deakin but you can apply most of the information to any institution. Parents and caregivers play an important role in providing guidance, information and support to their child as they plan their future and consider their further study options. It can be hard to know the best way to offer support to your child when it comes to choosing a course of study and a university. Deakin has put together some great tips on how to help your child stay focused and start developing the skills needed for university. I hope you find it helpful.
