Tuning into Teens Parenting Program

Dear Parents,

The Student Wellbeing team are running the PEERS (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) starting from week 4 of this term and will run weekly during this term. The program aims to support students who have difficulties with essential relational and social skills, especially in making and keeping friends. It will be a 10-sessions group program for students from Years 4 to 8. Students will be placed in age-appropriate groups. Research has shown that the techniques used, such as role-plays, demonstrations, behavioural rehearsal exercises, short videos, and homework assignments have been effective in improving social skills outcomes.

Some of the topics covered in the PEERS sessions are:

  • How to handle teasing, rejection and bullying/cyber-bullying
  • How to be safe online – social media issues
  • How to appropriately express difficult emotions
  • How to handle arguments and disagreements
  • How to use appropriate conversation skills
  • How to initiate and maintain friendships
  • How to choose appropriate friends

If you would like to refer your child to the program, contact the student wellbeing team on: wellbeing@wyndhamcc.vic.edu.au
