Women in Stem

As part of 'International Women's Day', eight Year 11 and 12 students, who are interested in pursuing a career in STEM, participated in a 'Women in STEM' event held at Chisholm University. The event started at 9am and concluded at 1pm, during our time we heard about first-hand accounts from women who are already working in STEM fields.

The event included a forensic lab experiment that allowed students to explore the field of forensic science. The main objective of the event was to empower young girls to explore careers in STEM and break down the barriers and stereotypes associated with women in these fields.

By providing statistics and real life experiences of the difference between how men and women are treated in such workspaces, staff and guest speakers at Chisholm provided students with valuable and empowering information regarding entering STEM workforces that we are passionate about as women.

The Royal Botanical Gardens

On Friday 24th February, the Year 7’s boarded the buses to journey into Melbourne to enjoy a day at the Botanical Gardens for an excursion that complements their English and Humanities studies. Students were divided into their class groups before rotating through three different activities for their ‘Connecting to Country’ experience.

Students were given the opportunity to learn how to braid grass whilst sitting under the shade of the botanical gardens. The instructor explained the significance of braiding to the Indigenous peoples of Victoria as it was used to construct a variety of tools, including eel traps.

Another activity was facilitated by the Indigenous educator who shared his knowledge of his language and history. He shared with us the significance of his totems and spoke in his native language. Students were able to get hands on with possum skins, boomerangs and other tools that replicated those used by First Nations Australians.

In addition, students were guided through a rainforest walk where plants used regularly by Victorian Indigenous peoples were identified and their purpose explained. Students were able to explore the space and enjoy the cool environment as a reprieve from the warm weather. The facilitator was impressed by our students’ knowledge of local flora and fauna and told teachers that Lakeside College had definitely broke the record for the amount of great questions asked!

At the conclusion of the three activities, it was time for a relaxing lunch in the gardens whilst enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Rave reviews were passed on by all and Arnold summarised it best with his review,  “honestly, it was a really fun day”.  What a wonderful way to spend a Friday!

Harmony Day - 21st March 2022

Harmony Day is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging.

To celebrate Harmony Day we ask all students for a gold coin donation to wear free dress with a splash of orange on Tuesday the 21st of March.

Students who do not wish to wear free dress to school on this day are welcome to wear their College Uniform. Students will be asked to dress appropriately.  They are reminded that they must ensure:

  • No mid-drift tops are to be worn
  • Shoulders should be covered – no thin strapped tops
  • No colour hair spray

Parents will be asked to collect students who come to school dressed inappropriately so that they can attend school in appropriate dress.
