Year 7 Student Managers Report

On behalf of the Year 7 Student Manager Team, a big welcome to our new Year 7 students at Vermont Secondary College.

Despite the collective nerves of the twelve new classes of Year 7 students at the school, the students have had a great start and appear to be settling in well. Every day the number of students arriving at the managers’ office saying “My locker won’t open” is reducing. The student managers have all appreciated the friendly “hellos” we receive in the corridors and around the Year 7 Centre.

For every problem, there is a solution and the Year 7's are navigating the many “new” encounters starting secondary college brings with it exceptionally well, despite those pesky feelings of uncertainty. New uniform, new teachers, new friends, new lockers, new routines, new bell-times, new rules, new rooms, new work, new yard territories, new school processes. Phew! Well done to all the Year 7's who are managing the transitions capably.

REMINDERS: LOST PROPERTY and ATTENDANCE

Please label school uniform and books with your student’s full name and home group. Items are beginning to be ‘lost’. Labelled items usually end up with the relevant student managers are more likely to find their way ‘home’ to their owner. This avoids much distress. Remember, students are responsible for the care of their own property. Please leave valuables at home.

- If your child is absent from school, please remember to register their absence on COMPASS to avoid the unexplained absence procedure.

OFF TO A FLYING START

It has been wonderful to see the 2023 Year 7 students commence the school year on a positive note. The feedback from the teachers has suggested that the students have demonstrated an enthusiasm for learning throughout their lessons and activities.

The Setting Up for Learning program has aimed to introduce students to the Vermont Secondary community. All students started the week by settling into classes, allocation of lockers and being connected to school network. Beyond the administrative tasks, they were provided with information for extra curricular activities such as being introduced to the School Production and Sport.

At the Music centre, they were offered a quick lesson on their instrument of choice and were encouraged to sign up for an introductory lesson.

Student Managers visited lessons and promoted the Vermont Secondary school values, encouraged the development of positive relationships among classmates and student were given a Diary use session to encourage them in developing positive study habits.

The aim of Setting Up for Learning week was to develop student connection to the VSC college and to provide the students with the skills and behaviours that they will require to navigate their learning.

As the year progresses students are reminded that their Student Managers are best equipped to assist them with any queries or concerns.

Parents are reminded that the Year 7 Information Evening will be on Tuesday 14th February, from 6:30 to 7:30pm. We look forward to meeting with you then.
