MATHEMATICS Enrichment Opportunities 2023 

 

Every year at Vermont Secondary College, interested students are given the opportunity to enhance their Mathematical knowledge and understanding through participation in a number of activities and competitions. The following enrichment opportunities are scheduled for 2023. Please be aware that the entries in some of these competitions will be by invitation only and restricted in number.  

 

Upcoming Events 

 

Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT)  

When: 2nd May 2023 Entry closing date: 26th February Cost: $8.00 per student 

 

This is a one-hour problem-solving competition designed to encourage student curiosity and promote multiple modes of thinking. Students do not need computer programming ability, but the competition helps identify students’ computer programming potential. The University of Melbourne School Mathematics Competition 

When: 3rd May 2023 Entry closing date: 26th February  Cost: $7.00 per student 

 

This competition is of a demanding standard, designed to identify real mathematical talent. Participation is likely to be rewarding only to those students who have a real love for, and ability in, mathematics. A limited number of students from year 7 to 12 will be invited to participate.

Maths for young Australians: Maths Challenge 

When: 3-week period during in Term 2 Entry closing date: 26th February Cost: $27.50 per student 

This is a mathematical problem-solving challenge, designed to extend mathematical skills over several weeks. A small number of students from years 7-10 will be invited to participate. Students invited will receive a problem book containing six problems. The problems are challenging and require time and persistence but are based on maths that should be known at that level. Students are encouraged to work with others but must individually write up their own solutions for each problem.

Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)  

When: 2nd August 2023 Entry closing date: 9th June  Cost: $8.00 per student 

 

The AMC gives students an opportunity to discover their talent in Maths and at the same time provide enrichment and challenge by the style of the problems presented.  It is open to students of all abilities in school years 7-12.  Students are asked to solve 30 problems in 75 minutes.  The first 25 questions are multiple-choice, and the last 5 questions require the student to write a number answer as a response.

ICAS Mathematics Competition When: 28th August Entry closing date: 9th June Cost: $19.25 per student 

ICAS is a school competition that inspires, celebrates, and challenges millions of school students across Australia, New Zealand and the world. The competition paper takes on the format of forty questions to be completed in 60 minutes.  The first 35 questions are multiple-choice, and the last 5 require the student to write a number answer as a response.  It is open to students of all abilities in school years 7-10.

Australian Intermediate Maths Olympiad (AIMO) When: 7th September 2023 Entry closing date: 17th August  Cost: $21.00 per student  

Are you interested in becoming a Mathematics Olympian?  We will be looking to invite a select few of our most talented students in Years 7 to 10 to participate in this four-hour competition.
