Kitchen Garden Program

On Tuesday morning of this week, our Year 3/4 students enjoyed their first Kitchen session of the year.

Using fresh silver beet, beetroot, snow peas, rhubarb and herbs grown in our school garden, they made delicious fritters, tzatziki, salad and flatbreads with poached rhubarb for dessert.

Our SKiPPS program is a part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation and allows our students to enjoy wonderful food education by planting, tending, harvesting, cooking and, most importantly, eating fresh produce.

Here are some quotes from the students-

  • "It was so delicious! It was a beautiful 3 course meal" Maddox
  • "It was a party in my mouth" Wiktor
  • "My favourite bit was the flatbreads. Allison and my group went out to the garden to harvest the fresh rhubarb" Annie
  • "It was not crusty or musty, it was perfect" Poppy
  • "It was easy to make and easy to eat! Almost every ingredient was grown with love by Allison in the garden" Gilbert
  • "Extra salt and extra lemon makes the fritters yummy and you have to flip them about 5 times to make sure they are cooked" Cleo
  • "The dessert was crazy delicious!" Chihiro

The remaining 3/4 classes will have an opportunity to take part in their kitchen sessions in the coming weeks. Don’t forget to bring your apron and take it home to wash it after your session!

Remember that all parents and friends are welcome to come along and help the groups.

Just make sure you have your Working with Children’s card up to date and register on sign-up genius

The recipes used in the program will be included in next week's newsletter.
