Year 12 Jackets have arrived!

Year 12 students are enjoying wearing their Year 12 jacket. The jackets were designed by a student focus group in 2022. Well done, they look terrific.

International Women’s Day Breakfast

On Wednesday 8 March, I was lucky enough to attend the International Women’s Day breakfast with Mont Albert and Surrey Hills Rotary Club, hosted by Women in Rotary. The event was sponsored by the charity You-Matter, supporting women and children escaping domestic violence. We heard from three inspirational speakers all sharing their stories of their life experiences and careers tying back to the theme of the day “Embracing Equity”. The day aimed to focus on the role of equity in today’s society and helping women of all backgrounds overcome the challenges they face because of their gender. It was an inspiring and invaluable day, with the speaker’s presentations and audience questions drawing upon the experiences of others in the room. I got the opportunity to ask a question to the panel about the role of student voice in instilling a positive culture within schools, and I gained insight and ideas on how to take what I learnt from this day and apply it to my own life. And of course, the breakfast was delicious. It was an early start but I am very grateful to have been a part of this morning full of education, laughs and lessons.

Y12 Alysa Reid goes to the National Schools Constitutional Convention

Is section 128 (the section that outlines the process of a referendum) still a necessary requirement to change such an important document as the Australian Constitution? This was the question that I and 115 other senior students from all around Australia discussed at the 28th National Schools Constitutional Convention which was held at the Museum of Australian Democracy in Canberra. During the 3 days that the convention spanned I heard from 4 different speakers, each offering a unique perspective to this question, and participated in a group with 6 other students from different states and territories where I discussed the disadvantages and advantages of section 128, this culminated in a mock referendum, organised by the Australian Electoral Commission. During this time, I also visited Parliament House where I observed Question time and have dinner at the High Court of Australia. I was also able to meet the Governor General, His Excellency David Hurley. Whilst at Government House, Her Excellency Linda Hurley sang a song she had written about the convention to the group and then encouraged us to sing “You Are My Sunshine” altogether. It was an amazing experience and I would recommend it to anyone interested in politics or law.
