Class Reps 2020

Are you interested in being a Class representative for your child’s grade in 2020?

Building a sense of community relies on all of our parents/guardians being adequately informed through effective communication and having opportunities to contribute to the school community and participate in school events.

Communication, contribution and participation are therefore themes that we aspire to engender through our Class Rep program.

What do Class Reps Do?

The primary role of the class rep is to encourage and maintain a sense of class community. This is done through, organising social events and facilitating communication for the families in their class. Each class needs to have one representatives who has volunteered to do this. In many instances the class representatives work in a team and cover the whole composite year level. (I.e. four class reps may together look after all of grade 3/4)

In order to encourage a sense of community, class reps are asked to, at a minimum, organise the following:

  • A social catch up at least once per term
  • End of term gatherings (this can be as easy as a picnic on the school oval)

Class Reps also play an important role in helping new families settle into our school and to encourage them to be involved in the school community. SKIPPA will generally inform the class rep(s) if a new family has joined their class. The Class Reps are responsible for providing all parents/guardians of children in their class group the relevant class contact list.

Class Reps are also the link between teachers and parents and may contact parents when teachers need assistance to find volunteers for class activities/excursions/events.  This provides a channel through which information can be shared and they can answer such questions as:

  • What do they need to bring for the excursion?
  • When is the next social event?
  • Which day does our class have library/music/art?

Finally, Class Reps may assist with events, acknowledgements - such as a class family member being ill or passing away, a teacher’s wedding or a new baby etc. If the Class Rep is in a position to help with organising a card or small gift and if there is time to take a voluntary collection, many parents are happy to oblige.
