From the Executive
Term 1 as always is a hectic one and this year has been no different with the added challenge of managing the COVID-19 outbreak and the issues that it presents to schools and families. It has been disappointing that many events have been cancelled or postponed and I really feel for the staff and students that had been looking forward to participating in them. We are hopeful to be able to reschedule some of these events where possible. Please find a link to School TV Click Here and some information on tips for coping with coronavirus anxiety. This will assist all of us when having open discussions with the students.
Before some of the restrictions were in place, many of the students were able to experience a variety of outdoor education activities including camps. Thanks to the college staff coordinated by Mr. Michael Pearson and Mrs. Deanne McDonald for generously giving up their time to ensure the students had a great experience. Some of the outdoor activities also blended in with personal development opportunities with our Year 10 students engaged in seminars around safe partying, driver’s education and completing the Morrisby Online Diagnostic Assessment as part of careers development.
In recent weeks it was great to see not just our Year 12 College Leaders inducted at the Inaugural Mass, but to see Year level SRC’ s announced and presented with their badges by Father John, Father Kevin and Father Giancarlo at the respective senior and junior school assemblies. They were reminded to lead in the Mazenod way; that being through service. These smaller assemblies are great opportunities to showcase the students' talents, to gain experience and confidence in public speaking and develop positive culture. Many thanks to the staff that facilitated these opportunities and the students that enriched them.
The Parent Information evenings were well attended at the start of the year. Depending on the year level, we ran different formats with opportunities to meet and hear from key staff that will be involved in your son’s education this year. The three areas that I highlighted were the characteristics of a high performing school which were good discipline, setting high standards and building a positive school culture. When students feel safe, valued and are happy, this will help them reach their academic potential in the classroom. I look forward to your support in achieving these aims as we continue to strive to make Mazenod College the best it can be for the community.
