ELECTRIC GUITARS, DRUMS, MULLETS AND MORE.....

Anticipation was at an all-time high for our Rowville Secondary College school production “Rock of Ages: High School Edition” on opening night.  The stage was dressed with professional sets and displays, casting us all back to the ‘80’s with a fantastic rock band positioned front and centre. Big hair, authentic characters and precision dancing all played a part in supporting this talented cast drawing us into the story of a country girl following her dream to the big city.

Lead characters wove their magic, captivating all with their energetic and professional acting, well supported by the chorus who maintained their characters enthusiastically throughout the performance. The sterling costume choices added flair, colour and depth, creating a visual feast.

The 80’s hits were brought to life with singers performing strongly as solo artists, duets and as a chorus. The audience, with feet tapping, hands clapping and reminiscing their own youth were invested in the journey. This show had it all with comedic antics, acrobatics, young love, people power and a satisfying end to a wonderful night of entertainment.

“A standing ovation for opening night of Rock of Ages was the icing on top for the extremely hard working and talented cast and crew of this production. The band is AMAZING, the sets, costuming, comedy and soundtrack just make you want to be a part of it all. Absolutely loved it. Coming back to see it again!” exclaimed one audience member.

There’s an enormous amount of work invested in a production of this calibre and you could see on the night how well the cast played their parts and supported each other. Although there were stand out lead roles where the actors delivered outstanding performances, there was also a sense of community when the cast were taking their bows.

“Working so closely with a group of talented peers across all year levels and all disciplines offered at Rowville, brings out the best in each of us and challenges us in ways we have never been challenged before.”  - Sören Adkin, Ensemble, Yr 8.

“Each year we are absolutely blown away by the kindness and willingness of the numerous people that involve themselves in the program and volunteer their time to making each show a major success.”  - Directors, Kacey Hocking & Julia Duke.

AUSSIE EXPERIENCE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

RSC hosted 3 short term study tour students from Hangzhou, China from 15th July to 2nd August. Below are reports on their experience.

Report 1.

Hello everyone! Happy time is always short. My three weeks study time at Rowville Secondary College has passed like this! During this time, I felt the enthusiasm of my classmates and the unique learning style. I have made many good friends and I have met many amiable Teachers. When I encountered difficulties, there was always many friends to help. The students answered questions very positively during class. I learnt different teaching styles of foreign countries. I would like to thank the students for their concern and enthusiasm for me over the past few weeks, and also for the Teachers kindness to me.

Report 2.

My name is Sam, I’m from Hangzhou china and I like sports and music. It’s a pleasure to come to Australia during my summer holiday. l had a wonderful three weeks in Melbourne.

School Days

Thank you for your help in the last three weeks. I learned a lot and made a lot of friends. The study is very different from that in China and the classes are very interesting. The teachers are so kind and the classmates are so lovely. I liked English and Italian, and my favorite class was PE.

Australia

Australia is a beautiful country, l like this place very much. The sky is so blue, and the air is so fresh. There are a lot of wild animals here. I saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins, glowworms and a lot of beautiful birds - they are so cute. Last weekend we went to the Gold Coast. The beach is amazing.

Report 3.

My name is William and I want to share my 15 days at RSC. In Math class, we learned about triangles and angles. In English class, we learned about a book called “Two wolves”. In the book, the little kid Ben is very brave, friendly and kind. In PE class, we played badminton, basketball and ping-pong, its fun here!

At lunch, some of the students play basketball and soccer. And I like to play basketball with these guys. They called me “Yao Ming “(My Chinese favorite basketball player), I felt very proud.

The differences between RSC and my Chinese school are:

  • Chinese schools need to do a lot of papers but the students here don't need them.
  • The advantage of learning here is that you can have an interest in learning.
  • The disadvantage is that the knowledge of learning is not as much as that of China.
  • The most important thing is that the teachers here are guiding students to learn, so they have a lot of practical projects.
  • Although Chinese children may be slightly more knowledgeable than they are, our life knowledge will be weaker than them.
  • The biggest difference is the students are friendly, kind and polite. The teachers are clever and it looks like they can make all our problems go away.

Thank you for giving me 15 days of fun RSC. I like the school. I hope I can come back next year!

DANTE ALIGHIERI COMPETITION 2019

Late term 2, 30 students from years 9-11 attended the Dante Alighieri Italian Poetry Competition. The students went to Melbourne University (at a venue called ‘The Spot’) to recite their poem in Italian and be judged on their performance by an assessor. The poetry recital in Italian provides the students with an opportunity to use the Italian language outside the classroom.

After the recital, the students & teachers wandered down to Lygon Street, for lunch they were able to indulge on pizza, pasta, cakes & gelati at Brunetti’s. After lunch the group continued their stroll down Lygon Street where students were able to engage and discuss Italian culture and the important contribution made by the Italian people in Melbourne and the wider community.

Results of the poetry competition were received at the end of term 2, with many students achieving pleasing results for their recitals. An enjoyable day was had by all participants.

*Brookly (left) & Kaylah (right).

Well done Scarlett

Scarlett Trotter has been selected into the U15 Two Bays Netball Region Squad (mixed team) who will compete at the State Titles in October, selected as a bottom age U15 player (the only year 8 student selected). "She wouldn’t be achieving these dreams of hers without the training and support she gets at Rowville Secondary College, so thank you!"- said Scarlett's mother.

Scarlett has also been selected into the U14 Indoor Sports Victoria Netball Squad, who will represent Victoria at the Junior National Championships in Toowoomba in November/December. She trialled against over 60 U14 players so to get selected so it is an amazing achievement. Taylah W, from Year 8 Netball was also selected.

YEAR 7 BOYS AFL

On Wednesday 14th  August, our year 7 AFL boys won and they are through to the state final to be played on the 27th August.  Well done boys!

More AFL Results:

  • Our Junior Girls lost in their state semi final on Tuesday so they essentially finished equal 3rd in the state.
  • Our Intermediate boys played on Thursday 15th August and won and are through to the state final on 28th August.

SENIOR NETBALLERS VS. QLD

On Tuesday 6th August our Rowville Senior Netballers played the Queensland School Sport 16-19yr State team. This was a great opportunity for our girls to play against a state level team. We rotated our 16 players over 6 x 10min quarters. It was a challenging match with the score even after 3 quarters. Our girls worked really well to adapt to different combinations and put into practice the systems we have been working on within our program.

Rowville fought hard in the final quarter to end the game on top with the score 43-40.  It is fantastic to have the opportunity to have the exposure to play state level opposition within a school program and our girls really benefited from the match.

JUNIOR NETBALL REGIONAL SSV RESULTS

On Wednesday 7th August our Year 7 and Year 8 Netballers competed at Waverley in the Regional School Sports Victory (SSV) Competition. Each team had 3 games in the rounds where we had to win all games to make the finals. Both teams were undefeated in the rounds and faced tough opposition in the Semi finals. Year 7s played Canterbury College while Year 8 played Camberwell High School. Both teams won and progressed to the the Grand Final. Year 7s were playing Ringwood SC and it started as a tight match in the first 2 quarters. In the second half though, Rowville stepped up and won the game 33-14. Year 8s came up against Norwood High School. Rowville started strongly stamping their authority on the game. We started the second half a bit slower but the girls dug deep and came home with the win 27-20.

This now means that both teams progress to the State Titles to be playing later this term. Well done girls on making it this far, we are all very proud of you!

Written by Ms. Erin Bell, RSA Coach.

INTERMEDIATE & SENIOR SSV NETBALL RESULTS

On August 9th, the Intermediate and Senior Netball teams played in the Eastern Metropolitan Region School Sports Victoria Championships. Both teams progressed through the rounds with some great wins, with their toughest match being against Lilydale HS for Intermediate and Vermont Secondary College for Seniors. In the Semi Finals, the Intermediates had a dominate win against Brentwood Secondary College with the score 39-5. The Seniors played Ringwood Secondary College and put out a great team performance winning 31-14 and all players taking the court.

The Grand Final saw the Intermediates take on Lilydale HS again. The team showed they had built throughout the day and put out a fantastic performance to win 29-16. The Senior team were up against Box Hill, whom they lost to by 1 point last year. It was goal for goal for the first quarter (4-4), but the second quarter saw Rowville put their foot down and win 10-2. This set us up for a great second half, with the final score being 25-15.

It was a great day for the school, with all players representing Rowville with fair play and good sportsmanship. The State Finals will be played in Week 9.

ELLA WILLIS - FLYING HIGH

Year 10 General Excellence student Ella Willis has a dream – a dream to fly! Ella belongs to the Australian Air Force Cadets and each week, Ella, with her Squadron, are trained in the necessary skills required for the Australian Defence Force including field craft tactics, aircraft identification, drill (marching), learning how to fly and more.

Ella’s goal originally was to become an Air Traffic Controller, but that changed with the encouragement of her mum, “…mum always told me that when I talk about flying, I always had a huge smile on my face.” Ella’s hope now is to attend the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra to complete a Bachelor of Technology and ultimately to become a pilot in the Air Force.

Ella’s dream has been made possible by her hard work and commitment and also by the choice of pathways available to students at Rowville Secondary College. She has a few favourite teachers including Nicholas Lowes, Haje Halabi and Anita Punnoos. “These teachers have all really helped me within the past year and are always making sure I’m doing well.”

When asked about ANZAC Day and the meaning behind it, Ella’s rich family history echoes her heart for our country’s defence force.

“My great, great Uncle Jack fought in WW2 on the beaches of Dunkirk and thankfully made it out alive. My Great Grandad was a pilot in the RA, and my Great Grandma whom I was close to, was an engineer and helped fix spitfires in WW2.”

It’s inspiring to speak with Ella and see her passion and dedication as a teenager contemplating a life of service to her country. She desires to wear her uniform proudly and would encourage her peers to remember how lucky they are to live in a country of peace, thanks to the diligence and service of army, navy and air force personnel. Ella’s closing comment reflects her commitment and drive to realise her dream, “I, Ella Willis, want to be like them and I want to honour my family history and our future freedoms.”  At Rowville Secondary College, we are so proud to be able to support Ella in her goals and wish her all the best both now and in her future studies.

@RIA NEWS

EMILY FRANKLIN - A RISING MUSICAL THEATRE STAR!

Kudos goes out to Year 10 RIA student Emily Franklin who has been in demand in both the local and global performing arts market.  In the recent school holidays, Emily, along with James Ydreos, Kaitlyn Soh and ex -student Sasha Missel put on a production ‘Legally Blonde Jnr’ with the Performing Arts Company in just 9 days.  Emily and all the cast were mentored by industry favourite Rob Mills.

“‘Legally Blonde JR’ was a joy to watch and it provided an excellent opportunity for our students to shine and demonstrate how versatile they are as performers, particularly as their roles in ‘Legally Blonde’ differ vastly from their roles in our college musical of ‘Rock of Ages’. The Performing Artists Company is one of many extra-curricular programs that our students are involved in that allows them to further grow and flourish as young performers, this really celebrates what RIA is all about. Congratulations to Emily, James and Kaitlyn.” said Ms. Madeline Dundon, RSC Teacher.

Such an incredible experience for the students James (who played Drew our main lead in Rock of Ages) played Prof. Callaghan, Kaitlyn (dance specialism) and Emily played Paulette Bonafonte.

"There are no words to describe how rewarding and inspirational this experience was. Being able to work with industry level artists at a professional level was truly incredible and motivating." – Emily Franklin.

"The quality of the show, which was put together in only 9 Days, was beyond my wildest expectations. Providing an opportunity for these kids to meet and talk with industry professionals, gave them the insight into what being on the professional stage is really like. One of those rare times in life that you know the kids will never forget." - Ms. Justine Franklin, Emily’s Mother.

Emily has been selected to go to the Junior Theatre Celebration in Newcastle in September with Players Theatre Company and was also nominated and selected to attend the Junior Broadway Pilot Program. A 1 week intensive program to workshop a new Junior Broadway Production to present at the Junior Theatre Celebration in September.

In January 2020, Emily will fly out with 39 other Musical Theatre students from across Australia, as the AUSSIE ALL STARS to represent Australia at the Atlanta Theatre Festival, USA. Spending 1 week in New York, working with industry professionals, going to Broadway Shows and working on their adjudication piece for Altanta. From NYC it's off to Atlanta to perform in front of approximately 6500 people then flying out to California to visit Universal Studios and Disneyland, where the group will undertake a behind the scene Disney Character workshop.

Well done Emily!  A gofundme page has been set up to help Emily realize her theatre dreams.
