The Peace Brigade program focuses on emotional management—namely, how to manage anger, which we all feel from time to time. The program ran for 5 weeks, incorporating a range of fun and educational activities, that equip the students with strategies that they can use in any situation. The techniques we introduce to the students help them to identify helpful and unhelpful behaviours that influence how they can react to their emotions and the circumstances they find themselves in. The program also solidifies positive behaviours that the students already practice, ensuring that they are supported in cultivating healthy and beneficial characteristics. Here are what a few of the boys thought about the experience:

“In the Peace Brigade program, I have learnt to control my anger in helpful ways such as using the Lazy 8 technique. I also expanded my knowledge of different emotions. My two favourite activities in the program were; emotions bingo and the Jenga questionnaire.”

Lucas, 6A

“What we have learnt in the Peace Brigade is to cope with my anger, emotions, and what to do when I feel like this. We have also learnt about different emotions, and when I get mad I have learnt that I can talk to people, or just sit out when I’m feeling sad, mad or angry.”

Isaiah, 6C

We had an amazing time getting to know each of the boys. It was encouraging to see how open they were to learn and engage with the activities. We hope that they have also enjoyed their time as much as we did!

Huge thanks to our Youth Work placement students Kaye, Candice D, and Candice A for their hard work and enthusiasm in creating and running the Peace Brigade program with the grade 6 boys!
