Grade 1 Fortnightly Snapshot - Term 2 Week 2

April 30 2021

Welcome Back to Term 2

What a positive and productive first fortnight back of term 2 we have had in Grade 1. Students thoroughly enjoyed sharing their holiday experiences and getting straight back into learning.

This week students will bring home two handouts regarding Seesaw - one is your parent login details and the other is information on how we will use Seesaw as a school this year. Once you have logged on you will see a reading and writing piece your child has completed over the past fortnight. Over the course of the year you will get a notification when students have uploaded a task to their Seesaw portfolio.

As you will see from the pictures below the students loved participating in a creative incursion provided by the Art Factory where they made Tiddalick the Frog - making connections to our current unit of inquiry. Below is a brochure and link for any parents interested in the classes The Art Factory provides.

Over the past fortnight students have been developing their ability to identify features of fiction texts including:

  • Identifying and comparing characters in texts such as Tiddalick the Frog and The Rainbow Serpent.

Students will move on to retelling stories using the 5 finger retell prompt as well as participating in fluency lessons to further improve their expression when reading.

Writing

In writing this fortnight students have been developing their ability to write character descriptions from stories they have read. This includes:

  • Identifying nouns and adjectives.
  • Describing a character using a noun and adjective.
  • Writing a statement to describe a character.
  • Using the conjunction “because” to describe a character’s inside traits.

Students will move on to expanding sentences next week.

Word Work

Students are continuing to revise the codes they learnt in Prep as well as adding new codes to their classroom working pack each week. Below is a PDF of the first 60 codes if you would like to continue revising these at home. If you click on 'present' and then click the code it will play the sound/s each one makes.

The past fortnight students have been boot camping rule #26 - Identifying when to use capital letters (people, places, titles, months, days and start of sentences). This has also been great for handwriting.

Students have boot camped the following rules so far this year:

Rule #1 - q doesn't go anywhere without u

Rule #6 - y replaces i at the end of an English word.

Rule #2 - c makes its second sound /s/ when followed by e, i or y.

Rule # 3  - g usually makes its second /j/ when followed by e, i or y.

Handwriting and letter formation is a focus during each boot camp session as this year we are trialing print instead of Victorian Modern Cursive.

Below you will find the handwriting script and the codes for your own use at home.

Mathematics

This fortnight students have been learning to count collections to 100 by partitioning numbers using place value, including:

  • Partitioning numbers by grouping in tens.
  • Identifying the number of tens and ones in a two-digit number.
  • Renaming 10 ones as 1 ten.

In order to consolidate, learn and extend the above skills, students participated in numerous hands on Maths experiences as you can see from the photos below.

Students will move on to measuring and comparing the length of pairs of objects using formal informal units.

Unit of Inquiry

As part of our How We Express Ourselves unit, this fortnight students inquired into:

  • What makes them unique.
  • What culture means - The way we live our lives and the things we enjoy doing (values,religion,traditions/celebrations, food, languages, sport, entertainment).
  • Cultural practices students have at home.
  • Similarities and differences students have in cultural practices with their classmates.
  • Someone else's cultural practice or language.

Next fortnight students will further explore features of Dreamtime stories and comparing these to their own culture.

Well-Being

As part of our weekly well-being sessions students have been learning about how telling the truth helps people trust us and maintain healthy relationships. They have also learnt how to be a humble winner.
