Junior School Report

Junior School Report

We welcome back our students to Term 2 at Scoresby Secondary College, and hope that you all had a safe and restful Easter break.

It has been a fantastic start to the term, with students looking great in their winter uniform. We hope that students have had time to reflect on their learning from last term and that along with the feedback given to them by their teachers on the Parent / Student / Teacher Conferences, they have set themselves some achievable yet challenging learning goals.

A reminder to students that homework club is a fantastic tool that can be utilised by students needing extra support and a quiet space to complete their homework. Homework club takes place in the library from 3pm – 4pm.

Year 8, 9 and Year 10 Information Evening

On Tuesday 4 May, we will be holding a Year 8, 9 and Year 10 Information Evening commencing at 7 pm in the Student Centre.

The evening will include a visit from guest speaker Kevin Bridle, Leading Senior Constable at the Knox Youth Resource Centre, who will speak to our students and families about the importance of cyber safety and helping students to develop skills to be safer online.

This night will also provide an opportunity for Year 9 families to learn about the Middle School Certificate, and the City Experience Program, which will take place in Term 4 this year. This is an important night for our students, and therefore we do encourage all students in years 8, 9 and 10 to attend with their parents / carers.

Excursions & Incursions

Robert Newton Incursion

On Thursday 1 April, Year 8 students gathered together  to meet Robert Newton, the author of Runner. During this incursion we learnt about his life and the story behind ‘Runner’, as well as his other published books.

Robert Newton explained the origins of his story writing, and how he used to send the short stories he wrote to his brother in Norway, and how this resulted in the audience for his writing growing. From there he learnt of his passion for writing, and followed his peers’ advice to begin publishing books.  He published his first book in 2001, ‘My name is Will Thompson’, which was a story inspired by his brother, who suffered from dyslexia.

We interviewed four Year 8 students and one of their teachers to see what they enjoyed most about the incursion:

Zach: “Getting the chance to ask Robert Newton questions.”

Alyssa: “My favourite thing was how he shared the process of writing and why.”

Sam: “Where I got to ask Robert Newton if he slid down the poles as a firefighter.”

Shaelah: “I enjoyed how he talked about more personal things.”

Ms Shirer: “I enjoyed watching the enthusiasm of the students interacting with Robert Newton, with the students having the opportunity to ask plenty of questions and get their books autographed.”

Overall, the Year 8 students and their teachers enjoyed getting the chance to meet Robert Newton, the author of the book that the students spent all of Term 1 studying. It was a great opportunity to ask questions, to learn about Robert Newton’s inspiration for Runner and to learn about the process of writing.

Intermediate Netball Interschool Sports

On 22 April, students in years 9 and 10 participated in an intermediate netball competition with other secondary schools at Knox Regional Netball Centre in Ferntree Gully. Prior to the commencement of the competition, we all warmed up and began to practice a variety of drills that we had learnt in our training sessions. The competition allowed us to compete in a number of games against Wantirna College, Rowville Secondary College Upwey Secondary College, and Boronia K-12. Although we didn’t win all of our games, we did manage to win our last game against Boronia K-12. It was a great day which provided us with an opportunity to build team skills, get fit and represent our College with pride. A big thank you to Mr Barnett for taking us out on this excursion.
