Senior School News

WELCOME BACK

I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday and Easter break.  It has been very pleasing to see that students have utilised these holidays in completing homework and preparing study notes and summaries.  I would like to thank our teachers, many of whom made themselves available to assist students with their work over the holiday period.

CONGRATULATIONS TO TAVISHEK (TAVI) SHARMA AND LACHLAN HAYES (CLASS OF 2020)

Tavi Sharma attended the Top Designs Exhibition opening with his Media Studies Teacher, Ms Annie Griffin on Friday 16 April.  Tavi was selected as one of only three Media/Photography students to have their work selected for Top Designs 2021 – part of the VCE season of excellence. Congratulations Tavi, we are very proud of your achievements.

Lachlan Hayes (VET Dance and Drama Student 2020) has been chosen by the artistic director who carefully selects works based on a selection of criteria from the Top Class concert to perform at Top Acts 2021.  This is an honour for Lachlan and we are very proud of his achievements. Top Acts is an evening concert which presents up to 18 VCE and VET performers from across the state to perform such acts as drama, dance and music and theatre studies all blended together into a dynamic presentation at The Melbourne Recital Centre on 1 May.  Congratulations Lachlan.

PARENT STUDENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

Thank you to all parents/guardians and students who attended these conferences.  The feedback was extremely positive and it was reassuring to know how much the school community values the excellent work of our teachers.  These interviews provide an important opportunity for teachers, parents/guardians and students to work together to further improve learning outcomes.

CAREERS AND TERTIARY EXPO

TUESDAY 25 MAY

I encourage all parents and students to attend the Careers and Tertiary Expo which will be held on Tuesday 25 May in the Senior School Presentation Area from 2.00pm – 5.00pm.  This is an excellent opportunity to meet with representatives from the major tertiary providers, to ask questions and gain information on the courses they have on offer.  This is invaluable in planning future pathways with your child. The Victorian Police will also be in attendance at our expo. All Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 students and their families are welcome.

We will be following this on the same day with our own Frankston High School Subject Expo where students can chat with experienced teachers about the demands of different VCE and vocational subject choices.  Further details will be on Compass closer to the date.  Thank you to our Careers Practitioner, Mrs Sharon Bourne, for overseeing these events.

MONASH SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Year 10 students who are interested in applying for the Monash Scholars Program should see me for further details.  Applications are based on students’ academic ability, leadership qualities and contribution to school and community life.  All applications must have a school endorsement.  The benefits of the Monash Scholars Program include: enhanced learning, exploring career ambitions, defining personal aspirations, preparation for university life and building networks with other high-achieving students.

MID YEAR EXAMINATIONS

A reminder to students and parents that the end of semester is Friday 4 June.  All Year 11 and Year 12 studies will have an end of semester examination.  Timetables will be distributed shortly.  The Year 11 examination period is from 11 June to 18 June, the Year 12 examination period is from 7 June to 16 June and the Year 12 exams will be held outside of class time.

Students must have a study/revision timetable in place and consistently review their class notes in preparation for these examinations.  Any students who would like assistance with study skills are most welcome to contact one of the Year Level Coordinators, Kirsten Bakker, or myself for assistance.

All students who are studying a Unit 3 and 4 (Year 12) subject are required to sit the General Achievement Test (GAT) on Wednesday 9 June.  There will be no timetabled Year 11 and Year 12 classes on this day.

I wish students all the best with their examinations.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

I would like to remind parents and students of the attendance policy in the senior school. Seven unexcused absences in a study and/or 15 absences in a study results in an N result for that study. Students must ensure all absences are annotated by the coordinators or office staff on the absence card in their diary.  Students must also ensure this is shown to all of their classroom teachers.  In order for the absence to be excused, parents/guardians must provide a note with a specific reason for the absence: illness, funeral etc.
