International Women's day

On Friday 12th of March, Thornbury celebrated International Women’s Day.

This year’s theme was #ChooseToChallenge; to challenge the world’s perception of women and their rights.

The pledge wall run by the Civics and Citizenship Committee was a great success with students and staff writing pledges to challenge sexist behavior and the disempowerment of women’s voices, particularly women of colour.

A mural of posters was also assembled featuring a wide range of inspirational women, from sport icons Cathy Freeman, Sally Pearson and Ash Barty, activists Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai, to women in STEAM like Dr Hayat Sindi, Katherine Johnson, Tu Youyou and Mae Jemison.

The Year 11 media class did an amazing job at making suffragette sashes with messages calling for equality.

Friday 12th March was a casual clothes day with the amount raised being a substantial $851.60. This money was donated to Juno Women’s Aid, a wonderful not for profit organisation that helps women and children domestic abuse survivors.
