Live Love Learn

Dear Families,

Again we have been thrilled to have all of the students and staff onsite. We are really impressed with the way everyone has settled into the new timetabling. At present, we have three separate Recess and Lunch breaks to maximise outside-time for students and to minimise mixing between year levels (in case of a COVID-19 case). We are looking forward to the time when parents can return onsite.

Lunch orders will be available again from Monday 15th November.

Building Update

Our new complex is taking shape and starting to look like the final design. Today I was fortunate enough to go on a tour throughout the facility with members of staff and visiting principals. It is a truly exciting project that will greatly benefit our students and school community for many years.

Please see the attachments below to show details of the new building.

Wellbeing

Less is Best

By understanding the difference between what you want and what you need, you will make better choices and be grateful for what you have. Advertising often tricks you into believing bigger is better and that if you buy something your life will be fabulous. Don't be fooled. The reality is that you will be much happier when you accept that less choice is usually best. Focus on appreciating how good the things you already have are.

School Closure Day

Friday 26 November, Galilee will be closed for students but GOSH will be operating. Make sure you book in on their website www.theircare.com.au.

Although we have only just returned from remote learning, we are proceeding as it will be a vital part of planning for 2022. Over the last two years we have cancelled several closure days which impact upon the professional learning and development of teaching practice.

Second Hand Uniform

The Second Hand Uniform Shop will be open on Wednesday 17th November and 1st December from 9-9.30am, at 228 Bank St, South Melbourne. Only the older style uniform is available for purchase at the moment.

No pram access is available.

*There is no access to the uniform shop out of hours listed above.

*If you are not double vaccinated, please email Tegan and Wendy your mobile number and Carla will contact you to arrange a collection time.

All older style uniforms that students can no longer wear will be donated to a charity that will send them overseas.

Student Learning

Year Five have been looking into the solar system and comparing the sizes of the planets and their distance from the sun. They collaboratively created scaled representations of the different planets which proved to be quite a challenge as some of the planets are pretty huge, whilst others are tiny in comparison!

Acrostic Poem Written by 2E

On the ocean floor lies an octopus.

Colourful coral grows.

Electric eels swim around.

Anemone stings its prey.

Neptune, King of the Ocean

In Year Six, we investigated the role of preventive health in our lives and the benefits of making efforts to manage and maintain a healthy lifestyle. We learnt about preventative measures for heart disease and tooth decay. To spread awareness, we decided to inform the students about the importance of looking after your teeth.

Did you know, that healthy teeth and gums also means a healthier cardiovascular system? Poor oral health has a negative effect on cardiovascular health in a few ways. When you have untreated tooth decay or gum disease, this bacteria and inflammation spreads throughout your body, primarily affecting your cardiovascular system.

Jump Rope for Heart

Galilee is participating in Jump Rope for Heart this year – a fantastic fundraising and physical activity program by the Heart Foundation.

When you register your child online you’ll get access to additional skipping resources to help give your child a great reason to get away from the screens and get outdoors. Register and create your own secure webpage at https://www.jumprope.org.au/fundraisers/Galilee-Regional-Catholic-Primary-School

Please read the letter below for all information.

Remembrance Day

Today we marked Remembrance Day. On 11 November at 11.00am, we paused to remember all of the men and women of the Australian Defence Force who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty.

Galilee Swimming Carnival

On Thursday 18th of November, we are holding the Galilee Swimming Carnival at the MSAC Outdoor Pool. Students in Year 3 - 6 will compete in the 50m Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly. Prep, Year One and Year 2 students will participate in a series of fun races/activities such as, noodles and kickboard races. Ensure your child has been given permission on Operoo (CareMonkey).

What to Bring: Bathers, towel, goggles, plenty of snacks and water, plastic bag, hat, sunscreen and a small bag for all items. Please ensure everything is named.

Due to current capacity limits at MSAC no spectators will be permitted at this event.            The carnival will finish at approximately 2:15pm and students will return to school before 3:00 pm.

Bowls for 5/6 Students

Year 5/6 students are invited to come down to Albert Park Bowls Club at St Vincent Gardens on Wednesday 17th November. Paul Mapley and Mr McLeish will be volunteering their time to meet boys and girls from 4-5pm to learn from the local expert members. Great fun to be had so please RSVP to pmapley@gsm.vic.edu.au by midday Tuesday if your child will be joining us.

Scripture of the Week

We are very fortunate that the celebration of all the sacraments will be able to take place this term.

Father Hugh has asked Fr. Gary to accommodate the OLMC students and their families. Fr. Gary has kindly agreed to his request. All sacraments will be celebrated at StsPP as follows:

Reconciliation: TBA with Fr. Gary

Eucharist: 4H Saturday November 27th at 10:00am, 4R Sunday November 28th at 2:00pm

Confirmation: Thursday December 2nd at 7:00pm.

As we get closer to the dates of these ceremonies, alongside the possibility of further restrictions being lifted, as well as StsPP needing to follow the Victorian Government's public health regulations, we will notify families of all appropriate guidelines.

Many thanks in advance for your support and understanding as we navigate this.

Best wishes,

Simon Millar (Principal)
