Science Talent Search

Earlier this year I took part in the Science Talent Search. This competition is designed to inspire our generation to take an interest in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) and to inspire them to begin innovating from a young age.

There are many categories for this competition. Categories include experimental research, short stories and short films. Across all categories group work is also a possibility. I chose to enter under the category of working models. I built a model oscillating steam engine- something that came under my two areas of interest, engineering and maths. Such a broad spread of categories caters for every learning strength.

The project was a significant addition to my regular workload, however the tasks were some of the most satisfying and enjoyable pieces of homework I have ever completed. Given the latitude of the competition, I could focus on my areas of interests (engineering and maths), choose my own project, and challenge my skill and knowledge in my own way. For example I learned to use a 3D printing program, a useful skill to have with our technological future. I also view this as a good way to learn organisational skills that will become essential in later school years.

I believe that any self-motivated and hardworking student can be successful and find the competition an enjoyable and memorable experience.
