Real World Mathematics Excursion

Spinning Blades of Steel is not only one of Australia’s easiest roof climbs it was also the centre of much fascination, and perhaps frustration, for Unit 1 Maths Methods Students. In undertaking a SAC inspired by the outdoors and mathematical modelling, students were challenged to create and analyse a number of models for the cross section of this famous climbing route.

Following the SAC students expressed an interest in venturing to the great outdoors and thus was born the Real World Mathematics Excursion. Students in Year 11 opted to participate, following their Unit 2 exams. They were asked to load test carabiners and investigate the mathematics of the Triangle of Death in the idyllic surrounds of the You Yangs. Every student attempted and ticked multiple climbing lines. Just as in maths it was the ability to learn from mistakes, persevere and seek help from their friends that saw students successfully complete each climb.
