Foundation - Learning Snapshot

What a super week, we’ve had in the Foundation Community. Our very first bus trip and visit to St Brendan's church. We were very proud of the children’s behaviour and the way they represented St Luke’s during our Mass. It was also lovely to see parent faces at our Mass, thank you for coming along.

A big thank you to everyone who attended Parent Teacher Interviews last week. This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and reflect on your child’s learning journey.

Junior Learning Community

Thank you all to everyone who attended the Parent Teacher interviews last week. It was lovely seeing you and having families in the building again. If you were unable to attend and would like an interview please don’t hesitate to contact us. (More information for Mercuri Parent Teacher interviews will come in the following weeks). This week we welcome back Gabriella Mercuri from her holiday overseas. It was wonderful to see the students going to our first mass at St Brendan’s Church in a few years. The children participated reverently and respectfully. This experience will lead nicely to our Junior Liturgy that is taking place next week at school.

Book week:

Book Week begins next week with the theme: Dreaming with Eyes Open.

Throughout the week our school will be celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. On Wednesday 24th March, students will be rotating classrooms to read this year’s Shortlisted books and do some creative activities. Then Friday 26th August is a Dress up day for our Book Week Parade. We will begin this at 9:15 am on the basketball court (weather pending). Students are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book of their choice. This is a great time to explore some picture story books at home and discuss their favourite characters and stories.

Literacy:

This fortnight we have continued our focus on narrative writing, specifically fairy tales. Students have worked to identify the elements of a narrative. The students have created their own fairy tales and are turning them into a book. We are so impressed with the imagination of the students.

Mathematics

This week is the conclusion of our unit on multiplication. Over the past few weeks students have been using concrete materials to construct 'groups of'. They have associated multiplication to their everyday lives through the use of worded problems. They represented multiplication equations through the use of arrays and explored its connection to addition. Your child's progress from this unit will be uploaded as an Ongoing Assessment task to PAM in the upcoming weeks.

Inquiry:

We are continuing with our unit: How Can I Be Healthy. Students created a keynote identifying the different food groups and their properties. We will continue to explore the benefits of different foods next week.

Religion:

Our unit of work on Baptism has ended this week and the Ongoing Assessment Task has been uploaded to PAM. Thank you for sending through your child’s photo from their Baptism. This provided valuable conversations in our classrooms. Students loved comparing different baptism symbols they had discussed in class. We now move into our new unit until the end of the Term: We can Pray in Different Ways.

Ongoing Assessments-PAM

As mentioned above, Religion Ongoing Assessments were released this week. Please take the time to view these and celebrate the learning of your child. Over the next fortnight, a Mathematics assessment task will be the third Ongoing Assessment to be uploaded. We will notify you when this has been completed.

Year 5 Mini Vinnies - 5 Cent Friday's

This year the Year Five students will be organising a major fundraiser. This money will be going towards a school 30 minutes outside of Lismore which was highly affected by the 2022 floods.  St. Joseph's Primary School in Coraki NSW had their sports sheds, school canteen and storage sheds destroyed during the floods. However their families lost everything with the school classrooms becoming evacuation points for the towns people. Many classrooms had beds set up with families creating makeshift screening to create privacy. Many students are currently still living with family and friends with a few continuing to live in tents on the school grounds as their homes continue to be uninhabitable. Families lost homes and business and were cut off from the outside world for weeks following the devastating

floods with no electricity or phone services.

We have decided to create a fundraiser to allow the school to assist those in their community who most need it.

Each Friday of Term 3 we will be collecting five cent pieces. We are calling it our '5c Fridays'. If students could please donate 5c pieces each Friday to our collection it would be greatly appreciated. Students can bring in as many as they wish to assist. Please if you wish to donate other coins these will also be accepted. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Thompson at school.
