Maths - 2D Shapes
In our first week of Term Two, the children started to learn about 2D Shapes. They learnt that 2D shapes have two dimensions (width and height) and are flat shapes. The children learnt about the properties of 2D shapes and were very eager to share with the class what they know about these shapes. They also worked in pairs looking at different 2D shapes and discussing the properties of these shapes with their partner.
Bounce Back
In Bounce Back, the children learnt about the importance of setting goals and the skills they need to develop to achieve their goals. The children listened to a story called 'The Carrot Seed’. It is a story about a young determined boy who wants to successfully grow his carrot seed. Everyone tells him he can't, but he continues to believe in it and take care of it. Through his faith the young boy successfully grows a large carrot. The theme of this story is determination and perseverance. In pairs the children retold the story and included the moral of the story. The children demonstrated excellent group work skills including the ability to communicate, respect each other's opinions and being accountable for their input.
Writing - Narrative
The children learnt that when writing a Narrative you need to think of an idea, introduce the characters, describe the setting, think of a problem that arises and how the problem is resolved. During this activity the children worked in small groups. Each group listened to a story and wrote details of the story on a Story Map. A story map helps break down the story, showing understanding of the text and the child’s ability to identify the characters, setting, the problem and the resolution. The children did an excellent job.
Writing - Information Reports
The children learnt to write Information Reports. These are reports that inform readers about a topic by giving them facts. The children researched Quokkas. As a class we read information about Quokkas from National Geographic and Kidscyber. We brainstormed facts about Quokkas on the white board and the children used these facts to write their Information Report. The children were reminded to include a heading and subheadings. They were asked to include facts about where they live, what they eat and what they look like.
Show and Share - Science Experiments
In Show and Share, the children were asked to present a simple science experiment or show a book about science. Through hands-on experiments the children can learn about the world around them in a fun and exciting way. The children presented a wide range of experiments, these included how a plasma ball works, an erupting volcano, a rainbow rain experiment, float or sink experiment and many more. The children were fascinated by the experiments that were presented. They were curious and their inquisitive minds came to the surface.
Maths - Partitioning Shapes
The children began learning about partitioning shapes. The purpose of partitioning shapes is to help children understand fractions and develop spatial awareness. By dividing shapes into equal parts, the children are learning how to recognize and work with halves, thirds, quarters, and so on. It's an important foundation for later maths concepts. The children watched a video explaining what it means to partition a shape and then completed activities where they divided shapes and recognised which shapes were divided in half, thirds and quarters.
Bounce Back
In our Bounce Back program, we focused on our special talents. We listened to a story called ‘Ella sets the stage’. Ella’s school is having a talent show and everybody has a special talent except Ella. She tries drumming, juggling and singing with no success. However, she finds a special role helping out and dealing with problems during the show. She realises her special talent is sewing and organisation. As a class we talked about our own special talents and we really do have a lot of talent in our classroom! We then created a class booklet of all our special talents.
