Year 4 Excursion to CERES

Last term we went on an excursion to a place called CERES. We did a lot of fun activities and learnt a lot about Aboriginal culture.

One of the activities we did was trying different Indigenous plants. The first one we tried was a leaf called Lemon Myrtle. It smelled like lemon and that was better than it tasted. It is the most popular Indigenous ingredient in Australia.

The second one we tried was one called Kakarla (Pig Face). It can be used as a water source, a food and a natural lip balm.

The third plant we tried was called Warrigal Greens or Aussie Spinach. It was not pleasant at all.

The fourth one we tried was called River Mint. It was used to cure sicknesses. The last one we tasted was named Salt Bush. It tasted like plain salt, which it’s name suggests. It was used for seasoning dishes.

Another activity we did was playing on an awesome playground. A fun fact about the playground was that it was made from 95% recycled materials. The best thing about the playground was that there was something for everyone to do.

One of our highlights was making ochre. Our instructor Tul taught us how to make and paint ochre on our skin. We learnt about different Aboriginal symbols they use to create stories. The Indigenous people also used symbols and ochre on their bodies for traditional ceremonies. We made ochre and painted our faces, arms and legs. We even got to print our hands on the ‘Wall of Hands.’

The way you make ochre is lots of fun. It’s easy to do at home too. Find a bright red rock from the outback and put it in a container, crush the rock and then add some water and let it sit for a while. Then dip your finger in it and stir. Then you can decorate rocks and your skin.

We also acted out the Dreamtime story, Tiddalick the Frog. It has been around for more than 6,000 years. The animals in the story were eels, cockatoos, kangaroos, possums and frogs. Most of you will know, it but this is for people who don’t. It is about a thirsty frog Tiddalick, who drinks up all the water on the land. The animals become so thirsty. They get together to make Tiddalick laugh. After they dance, make jokes and do silly things, the possums were successful in making Tiddalick laugh. The land was filled with water again.

We really enjoyed CERES and hope we can go again soon.
