Year 3/4 Term 3 Overview

Term 3 Year 3/4 Overview

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you found time to relax and recharge with your family and friends. This term promises to be a busy one with Hoop Time, Emmaus production, Father’s Day Breakfast and the whole school production!

Religious Education

In Term 3, we will explore Jesus’ journey of places he lived or visited from the New Testament, using a map. We will be reading and analysing scripture messages and gospel stories to learn about the climate and environment of where Jesus lived and travelled in Israel. This links to our Geography unit in Inquiry.

Mathematics

In Number and Algebra we will begin this term focusing on the relationship between Multiplication and Division and exploring these connections further, using a variety of mental and written strategies. We will also be looking at the processes of subtraction, addition and multiplying through the concept of Money.

In Statistics and Probability, students will be collecting data, organising it into categories and creating displays including lists, tables and simple column graphs.

In Measurement and Geometry we will focus on Volume, Capacity and Mass using metric units to measure, order and compare. We will also explore Location, through interpreting maps and other geographical data and information.

All lessons are preceded by fluency practice and supported by the online Mathletics and Essential Assessment program.

Literacy

This term we will be studying the author Katherine Applegate and reading ‘The One and Only Ivan’ as a class. Students are following along with the text each day and will work on becoming more confident when reading aloud. We will be focusing on predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising at different points in the text, not just at the beginning or end. We will be learning more about the language choices made in texts that explain and inform the reader and will continue to extend our vocabulary by writing descriptively. Please continue to encourage your child to read aloud at home, to develop their expression and intonation, as well as reading independently.

Social & Emotional Learning:

This term in SEL, we will be identifying a range of conflict resolution and help-seeking strategies to negotiate positive outcomes to problems. Through role play, students will practise asking for help in various scenarios and suggest different ways of coping when faced with difficult situations.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, we will be focusing on Geography, specifically looking at describing characteristics of places and environments. Our big question is ‘What is the impact when we respect and embrace our environment (surroundings)?’. We will be researching and becoming familiar with different landforms including forests, grasslands, woodlands and deserts. With our knowledge and understanding of natural resources/landforms, students will create their own country, including specific features of location, climate, animals, resources and landforms.

Homework:

Homework will be sent home on Tuesday Week 1 and needs to be completed and returned by Tuesday the following week. Sometimes students will have weekly homework, sometimes they may have fortnightly homework. Students may have only compulsory tasks or may have the option to also complete choice activities. Please encourage your child to complete tasks to their best of their ability and submit something by the due date, even if not fully complete. If your child is struggling to attempt their homework on their own, please speak to us.

Specialists:Please see the timetable below for specialist lessons. Students will be required to wear their sport uniform on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Students will also need to bring in their library bag and books on Wednesdays.
