It was a great welcome to Ensembles at Canterbury over the first few weeks of school. Year Seven have been avid in their enthusiasm for participating in our extensive CAPA Ensembles program. New and returning students anticipate another year creating and producing wonderful performances. It is good to see so many grasping the opportunity to extend their skills, take up a new pursuit, or simply to have some fun and make new friends. Let’s just explore some of the ways we found to be creative as we embraced 2021 at CGHS.

Performance opportunities may be slightly reduced and the ability for our students to mingle across year groups may have been limited by circumstance however, their desire to just create has been undiminished. Curriculum enrichment activities for all our students are intended to supplement the existing rigorous syllabus, and help to develop practical techniques and provide performance opportunities for all. One of the ways we do this is through our bi-annual musical production.
Our 2021 Musical Production is “CLUE” – The chosen design for our production illustrates the close connection with the well-known board game ‘Cluedo’.
2020 saw the establishment of student production teams for our presentation of “Clue Design, song writing, scripting, art making and audio teams have brought the idea through the concept and planning stage, and are now working on the realisation and rehearsal of this student centred presentation. Performances are anticipated for May 2021 and already over one hundred students have contributed to the concept, despite the need to work in smaller and more discreet groupings in keeping with DoE Covid Guidelines.
Visual arts
Amongst the vast array of artistic talent we observed in 2020 was the work of Jaime Soo as she produced the beautiful “Unconscious relations” and Zoe Morris with her work “Invasion Meltdown”. Students are encouraged to employ their observational, investigative and research skills both at school and at home in order to bring their world, ideas and interpretations into their artistic responses.
Dance
Dance is offered as an elective subject from Year 8 to Year 12 (HSC Course). Our students are encouraged to participate in workshops with Sydney Dance Company and to audition for a range of Arts Unit Dance Ensembles/Events.
In addition to the Dance Elective courses, students have the opportunity to broaden their performance experience through extra-curricular dance groups. Dance Ensemble provides Year 7 students the opportunity to develop dance skills through technique lessons that are held every Tuesday morning (7.30 – 8.30am). There is no audition required and this ensemble has the opportunity to perform at Dance Showcase Evening (August) and MADD Night (November) and the biannual School Musical.
In addition to Dance Ensemble, students who demonstrate potential and a consistent level of commitment may be invited to join the school’s representative Dance Companies. Junior Company (Yrs. 7 & 8) and Senior Company (Yrs. 9 – 11). Dance Company members represent the school at a regional level through Dance Festivals, Schools’ Spectacular and selected dance eisteddfods.
Drama
Drama is offered to all students from year 7-12 with opportunities to participate in performances arising across the year. We run Drama Ensembles at lunchtime and after school and all Ensembles are working towards 2021 MADD night and the Drama Showcase. Our Ensembles give students an opportunity to extend their classroom experience, hone their collaborative and performance skills and work towards a more polished standard of performance. We encourage our students to apply for Regional and State Drama Ensembles, run by the Arts Unit.
Music
Musical expression at CGHS permeates all corridors, gardens, classrooms and performance spaces. Students use class time and extra-curricular time to grasp the wonderful opportunities we have on offer for our students. We encourage participation in a range of performance activities from Showcases, Education Week, Schools Spectacular, CG#Sounds Recording Project, Winterfest, MADD Night and Musical Productions.
Our regular music program is underway as external music tutors come into the school in school hours and teach private tutorials students for a small fee. Lessons are available in: Orchestra, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Strings, Woodwind, Voice and Piano.

Hopefully 2021 will bring a return of the full complement of musical expression within our school. All of our many talented musicians have been working in a variety of guises though it has only been our choirs that have continued to be impacted by DoE Covid Guidelines. What do creative students do faced with such a dilemma? They find new and different ways to create. They have come up with tech savvy ideas to keep playing and collaborating across long distances. Students and teachers have adapted and changed quite rapidly to new situations. It may all sound like a lot of hard work, however it’s not hard work when they are collaborating with friends, extending their abilities and creating beautiful music together
