Prep 2021

Welcome to Prep!

The Prep team are very excited to be working with and supporting your child in their first year at Primary School! We have a highly committed and energetic team and look forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure your child achieves their highest potential. As partners, we will do our very best in carrying out our responsibilities and ask that you guide and support your child’s learning and transition by observing the information below.

We also ask that you keep informed and action requests as they are posted to the Compass News Feed throughout the year.

SMART Spelling

BNPS uses the SMART Spelling approach for the teaching of Spelling from Prep to Year 6. This is an evidence-based approach developed by Michelle Hutchison, an experienced Literacy Educator. More information will be provided on Compass throughout the year.

Take Home Books

Prep students will receive their Take Home Books on Monday 8 February. Students are encouraged to read on a daily basis.

Wushka

In addition to our school reading  program BNPS subscribes to Wushka for our Prep - Year 2 students.  Wushka is a cloud based leveled reading program that students will access at school during Literacy sessions.

Students will also be able to access Wushka at home and read leveled books as well as completing a quiz after they have finished

reading.

Your students login details will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Mathseeds

This year BNPS has subscribed to Mathseeds for Prep - Year 2 students. ABC Mathseeds combines highly structured lessons with fun motivational elements that keep children engaged and keen to learn. Students will be accessing Mathseeds at school on a weekly basis.

Your child will also be able to login to Mathseeds at home. Login details will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Word & Number of the Week

The 'Word and Number of the Week' will be posted on Compass at the beginning of each week.

Students are encouraged to practise their alphabet, letter and sounds, and identify the 'Number of the Week' around home or whilst out and about.

Magic 100 Words

‘Magic Words’ will be posted on Compass later in the term for your child to learn. There are several staggered levels which collectively make up the ‘Magic 100 Words’. We would appreciate your assistance by helping your child to learn their words by reading through the list together each day.

Curriculum/Units of Inquiry

Throughout the year students will explore six transdisciplinary themes, through Units of Inquiry. Mathematics and English require elements of explicit teaching but may also have a focus through inquiry. Humanities, Science, Health, Technologies and Civics are studied through inquiry learning. In the process the students will be challenged to explore, research, question, predict and solve problems. Inquiry engages students actively in their own learning.

Units of Inquiry will be posted on Compass along with 'Curriculum News' updates to keep you informed.

We look forward to an exciting world of inquiry in 2021.

Specialist Programs

A timetable of your child's Specialist times has been posted on Compass, please ensure you have printed a copy and placed it in a visible area.  Please support your child and ensure they have the appropriate items on the correct day.

A ‘Specialist News’ update will also be provided each term via Compass.
