Update from the SRC

Update from the SRC (Student Representative Council)

In Term 4, the 2020 SRC goal was to investigate the effectiveness of the current detention or ‘restorative justice’ systems at O’Connor. Students from Years 7-11 were asked to give voice their opinions and share some ideas about what may work better in the future.

The summary of findings were:

  • 41% of the students surveyed did not understand what the purpose of detention was
  • 38% of students viewed detentions as a form of punishment
  • 63% of students did not know what the steps were before being put on detention
  • Uniform infringements and not following instructions were the main reasons for being put on detention
  • 80% of students who had been put on a detention before said that it did not deter them from repeating the behaviour
  • 87% of students said that whilst the current system is not effective, there is a need for some kind of consequence in our community.

This information was presented to Leaders of Learning at the end of last year, and again to Leadership in Week 1. We would like to thank all students who voiced their concerns and suggestions for how we could improve the system. This feedback will be used to help shape the restructuring of the way we do our restorative work at O’Connor in the future.
