GERMAN LANGUAGE

Interesting fact: GERMAN is Number 5 in world languages behind English, Chinese, French and Spanish.

The German linguist Professor Ulrich Ammon researched the use of German around the world for 15 years and published his findings in his book Die Stellung der deutschen Sprache in der Welt already in 2014.

According to his research, the number of German learners is rising worldwide. Due to the successful economy and German´s leading role in the European Union, about 14.5 million people learn German today. 144 countries around the world teach German in schools and universities, even in North Korea. More people study languages today for economical reasons than to enjoy literature in another language.

SPANISH SOCCER COACHES VISIT MCKINNON

On Friday 23 March, the Year 9 Spanish class were involved in a soccer incursion. Two highly qualified soccer coaches from Valencia, Yago and Carlos, came to school to show them how soccer players are trained in Spain.

Students learnt some basic soccer skills in Spanish and had the opportunity to put in practise the vocabulary that they had already learnt in class. It was a hot day but the students tried hard and seemed to enjoy the activity.

YEAR 9 FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL

On Friday 23 March, we accompanied three Year 9 classes of French students to Kino Cinema in Collins Street, Melbourne.

Our very well behaved pupils were going to take part in a popular French Film Festival. Everybody was very excited by the new sequel of French film "belle et sebastien" as many students had already seen the first part. This drama was set in the French and Swiss Alps, during World War 2 and Nazi occupation of France. A 12 year old boy, Sebastien, had to conquer the challenges of protecting his animal friend, belle, and her three pups. Sebastien and his guardian Pierre had to confront the mean villain, Joseph, to save ”petits chiots” – pups. Everyone was delighted with a happy ending and Sebastien’s bravery saving the captured puppies.

All the tension released, the outstanding acting was rewarded by huge audience applause. It was clear that this visually stunning film packed with action, thrills and suspense successfully delivered the message of strong friendship, fighting for what you believe and caught everyone’s heart. No doubt our Year 9 French students’ language skills were enhanced and challenged, as well.
