SPORT REPORT

We have just completed a busy Term 4 of Interschool sport with many Western Metropolitan Region finals taking place in the first few weeks, most of them in Geelong. These teams included Intermediate Boys Cricket, Year 7 Girls Basketball, Years 7, 8 and Intermediate Boys Hockey, Year 8 Girls Basketball, Year 8 Girls Table Tennis, Years 7 & 8 Boys Baseball and Year 8 Boys Tennis. It’s great to see our school doing so well in such a wide variety of different sports. The three most successful teams were our Year 8 Boys Tennis and Year 8 Girls and Year 7 Boys Hockey teams who were narrow runners-up to Maribyrnong Sports Academy and, therefore just missed out on going to the State Championships.

Speaking of State Championships, in week 3 this term five of our students qualified for the State Athletics Championships held at the Victorian Athletics Centre in Albert Park. It was a fantastic effort to win through to this final elite level of competition and it was topped off with all five finishing in the top 10 in Victoria. They were Breanna Hudson (Year 7) 3rd in Shot Put & 4th in Discus, Makayla Hudson (Year 8) 2nd in Discus, Jackson Glover (Year 11) 2nd in 2 km Steeplechase & 9th in 3 km, Max Taylor (Year 12) 6th in 1500m and Atey Weldeaatzgi (Year 11) 6th in Javelin.

I spoke in the last newsletter of the number of un-heralded sporting talents we have within our school cohort. There are many students who go about their business after school and on weekends competing brilliantly in a wide variety of sports some popular and some less known. Another example of this is one of our Year 10 students – Sam Wilson – who recently competed in the State School Victoria Indoor Rowing Championships (see photo). Sam won all four events he entered in the U16s 1 minute sprint, 500m, 1000m and 2000m. He is now being screened for entry into the VIS rowing program. Good luck Sam for the next stage of your rowing pursuits.

Finally, a big thank you to all the staff, particularly the Health/PE teachers, who gave up their time and energy to coach so many different teams throughout 2018 and I wish everyone a safe and healthy break.
