ATTENTION BASKETBALL PLAYERS, COACHES, MANAGERS AND PARENTS – Important season update.

Please be aware that due to the uncertainties surrounding when contact training and competition can begin again for indoor sports under COVID restrictions set down by the government, the HBA has decided to postpone the start of the new season until the beginning of Term 1, 2021.

Importantly, please be aware that the season when it begins will cover the period between Term 1 until the end of Term 3 – so this means that those of you that have registered your interest to play already for a College junior team MUST BE COMMITTED for the length of this season.

Could you please have a think about what your commitments may be for this period, obviously including winter sports, and if you decide you can no longer commit to a team in 2021 contact Mr Alexander if playing Under 14, 16 or the new 18 and under competition or Miss Brabham if playing in the Under 10 or 12 competitions by Friday 20th November at the latest.

We plan to not change the teams if we do not need to so if we don’t hear from you we will be placing you in a team for next year. Team entries will be due to the HBA by early December with the plan to have them finalised this year and ready to go when school resumes next year.

There is no word on SENIOR basketball as yet and we will outline details of the return to senior basketball when it comes to hand.

If you have any queries please contact either Mr Alexander at the Senior School or Miss Brabham at the Junior School

Cricket: Under 14 College Gold

The saying “a week is a long time in football” certainly could be used to describe the Under 14 College Gold cricket team’s last two weeks!

Round 4 against Hamilton was a performance that we would like to forget allowing the opposition 139 runs from their 24 overs and we weren’t able to take a wicket. In reply we could only manage 5/78 with George Huf batting superbly to retire not out on 26. Tom Templeton’s efforts in opening the batting and facing much older boys who were bowling well was also most pleasing to witness.

Some positive and repetition practice on our bowling techniques and areas to bowl at training during the week proved most valuable as we had our best performance with the ball and also in the field taking numerous catches against Tahara on Saturday morning as we defended 8/110 to restrict the opposition to 9/69 and record our first victory of the season. Stars with bat included George Huf who continued his good form retiring again while Fergus Peddie (11) and Max Hindhaugh (21no) did a fine job at the end of the innings. The majority of the bowlers did a great job with the standouts being Charlie Hawthorne taking 4 wickets and being on a hat trick at one stage, Jack Jarvis getting 2 wickets with his swing and bounce and Jude Alexander, Jock Nicholls and Hugh Stratmann taking a wicket each and bowling very economically.

The improvements shown and positive attitude of the boys over the 5 weeks has been impressive and, as we move into the two-day games beginning with Grampians at Mitchell Park the next round, this will allow the players who are prepared to defend good bowling to bat for long periods of time and the bowlers who can consistently bowl a good line and length to bowl more overs.

A big thanks to those parents who have been scoring for the team so far and if anyone who hasn’t done it yet but would like to learn please ask me or a parent who knows as this helps share the load during the season.
