'Stillness' - Anthology

Charlotte Pulbrook - Year 11

Stillness

A word which alludes to such simplicity

Yet marks contrasting footprints in our paths.

While some bask in its serenity

Others grieve the very sole of movement

A light breeze among the sand

Develops an undulation of waves

Some sway with the gentle brush of the trees

Others are swept up by the tide

Tranquillity may deceive

Whether it’s a clear sky or calm sea

When one element sails towards the horizon

A brightness descends with the sun

Usually, those who cannot lead themselves back to land

Swim to stay afloat

Merely skimming above the surface

For anything beats the paralysing chill of the current

But when they are anchored to one place

What do they do

For who would rather sink

Than stay afloat?

Waist-deep for now

Feet submerging further into the sand

Who knows how long before There’s no sight of land

A distant reflection

Of those you miss most

Ripples through the water

Providing temporary solace

The sun once again descends

Feet sinking deeper in the sand

Further and further away from land

I call but no one is there

Have I ever felt this bare?
