Grade 5/6 Food Technology
In week 4, the Grade 5/6 students made their own Savoury Pinwheels for Food Technology. Students were delighted to design and produce their very own Pinwheel with their own flavour combination.
It was wonderful to hear such positive feedback and that some students went home and have produced them again. I encouraged the Grade 5/6 students that they could make these at home, freeze them, and then use them for their lunches at school. I have included the recipe below. You can modify the recipe and create your own flavour combination.
Savoury Pinwheels
Makes 12 pinwheels
1 sheet puff pastry
2 tablespoons tomato paste
½ teaspoon mixed herbs
1 spring onion sliced
1/8 red capsicum dices
1 slice ham shredded
¼ cup mozzarella cheese, grated
METHOD
- Preheat the oven to 250°C. Cover baking tray with baking paper.
- Place puff pastry sheet on tray and spread pastry with tomato paste.
- Sprinkle pastry evenly with herbs, vegetables, ham and grated cheese.
- Roll up pastry to make a long roll.
- Using a sharp knife, cut pastry into 1cm slices.
- Place pinwheels flat on the baking tray.
- Bake in oven for 15-18 minutes.
- Check to see if your pinwheels are cooked. Remove them from the oven and place onto a cooling rack. Allow pinwheels to cool.
Tips and Techniques
*The pastry should be thawed before you begin to roll the pinwheels, otherwise it will crack. But don’t let it thaw too much otherwise it will be too soft to work with.
* When rolling up the pinwheels try to keep even pressure and an even roll happening.
The oven should be preheated before putting the pinwheels in as this will decrease cooking time and allow a nice crispy outer texture to the pinwheels.
*Ensure that you cool the pinwheels fully before trying to remove them from the tray.
This week the students continued to develop their skills in kneading and designing their own pizza. It was wonderful to see students approach their learning so enthusiastically. I have encouraged students to make these at home as the recipe can be used for Pizza bases or Savour Scrolls.
2 Ingredient Pizza Dough
1 cup SR Flour
1 cup Greek Yoghurt
Plain flour (extra for dusting)
METHOD
- In a bowl, combine the flour and yoghurt and bring together to form a ball.
- Turn onto floured board to knead and roll.
- Knead for 5-8 minutes.
- Roll into a pizza shape and add toppings or roll into a savoury scroll.
You can make these ahead and freeze them for lunches.
Year 3/4 Textiles
Students in Grade 3/4 have been inspired by Mirka Mora and have created their own dolls using a range of textile items. They have used the design process to plan and produce their own version of a Mirka Mora Doll.
Primary Agriculture
Last week Edenhope College welcomed 12 lovely feathered ladies to our school. The students in F-2 delighted in seeing the chickens who are a welcome addition to our school Agricultural program.
The primary students under the leadership of Declan, Layla and Lolah are responsible for the watering of the Vegetable Garden and ensuring the chickens are feed and watered each day.
Thank you to Declan, Lolah and Layla for your leadership.
This week the 5/6 students have been busy planting herbs in the vertical garden in the Big Barn.
Sweet Desires
Over the last 2 weeks students in Sweet Desires have been busy baking and making Mini Orange Syrup Cakes and Chocolate Mousse.
I was very proud of the students' attention to detail in creating their own chocolate garnishes and using them with seasonal fruit to garnish their dessert.
Students also had the opportunity to design and decorate a slice of watermelon with their chocolate garnishes and seasonal fruit.
As you will see by the photos we have some very talented students at Edenhope College!
