THE BIG IDEA

What is it?
Our planning centres around the 'Big Idea' -
A Big Idea is:
An idea that is continuously unpacked
Has a real world context
Allows students to explore concepts more deeply and think critically about the world around them
Promotes higher order thinking
Promotes curiosity
Enables students to apply their skills and demonstrate their understandings in a variety of ways
Is interdisciplinary, incorporating all areas of the curriculum
Our Big Idea for this term is:
We live in a country where all citizens are part of a democratic society
and have a responsibility to contribute to its prosperity
It explores Civics and Citizenship and Personal and Social Capability
within The Victorian Curriculum.
The Driving Questions that will start our investigation into this statement are:
1. What is democracy and how is Australia a democratic country? (Government, laws, rights)
2. How and why are decisions made in a community?
3. How can I contribute positively to my community? (responsibilities, cultures, communities, awareness, relationships)
We have begun to unpack the statement through having conversations about its meaning.
Wonderings that students have will also 'drive' our learning in order to develop deeper understandings of concepts.
As part of this unit, we will explore a range of literature that support the Big Idea.
