ACMI Visual Effects and Illusions Workshop

On Tuesday 16th August, Media Students at Taylors Lakes Secondary College participated in an all day workshop that built their skills in media production. Students and teachers travelled to ACMI at Federation Square for this exciting learning experience.

They made amazing videos that showcased students disappearing and reappearing in triplicate to name a few of the special effects they were able to develop. It was a valuable learning program that will build the skills of these year 10 and 11 students.

The Visual and Effects excursion at ACMI in Federation Square was a real highlight of the year for the Year 10 and 11 Media students in attendance. The day flew by as we were all engaged in the annotating and interpreting of scripts in short hand, filming and editing using high-end technology and editing tools led by expert staff at ACMI. All students had wonderful things to say including, "it was the best excursion I have been on", and were impressed by the opportunity to learn key film making skills as the students discussed how great it was to work with the staff, cameras and the ease and enjoyment of editing their films using an accessible editing application. The 2022 students highly recommend this workshop to others interested in learning about film making.

Whilst attending the ACMI excursion, I learnt about how special effects are used in movies and was able to create a short film in a group to apply special effects into our own short film. We learnt how to use the camera and tripods and started to film our awesome film. We were also taught how to use the editing app Final cut to create a film. I enjoyed this excursion quite a lot because it was hands on and allowed our minds to be broadened in the fields of television, movies, and media.

The excursion to ACMI at the Visual effects and illusions workshop, was a very fun yet educational experience. There we looked at the filming and editing stages of production. After an introduction, we went around federation square to use film techniques, such as the whip pan, which we later used in the editing stage, giving us the effect of a clone. When editing we used a very user-friendly software ‘Final Cut Pro’ which I personally would like to see the school adapt rather than have us continue use the adobe premiere pro software. Overall, the excursion was definitely a memorable one where I will carry the knowledge learnt from it over to my school classes.
