History Challenge
History Excursion: Creative Catalyst
On Tuesday the 23rd of August, 40 nominated students were able to travel to the National Gallery of Victoria and Federation Square NGVA to participate in a History Challenge to extend their learning. This is part of the Taylors Lakes Secondary College collaboration with the Victorian High Abilities and Student Excellence Program. Students were able to undertake a program that focused on art and how this informs our historical understanding of Australia.
This program uses artwork from current special exhibitions to bring history to life through visual analysis and storytelling, and explores Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Compare and contrast artworks from a range of cultural perspectives
- Identify the reasons for immigration and discuss its impact on Australian identity
- Analyse and interpret themes, concepts and ideas in Australian artworks
We received very positive feedback from the program coordinators at the NGV who commented on the excellent participation of our students. Thank you to our student ambassadors for engaging so well with the program and for developing their learning in this important area of History.

I found the creative catalyst excursion quite interesting as I got to learn more about the Aboriginal culture and more about the past of Australia. It was interesting to see old artifacts and paintings from earlier on. I would definitely recommend this excursion to anyone who is offered it.

I found the Creative Catalyst very interesting, as I was able to find out about our ancestors and our past. I was especially amazed by the amount of painting and drawings from the old times. Overall, I thought it was a great experience and I strongly recommend people to attend if invited.
