Sovereign Hill Excursion

Year 5 students travelled to Ballarat on Thursday 11 August for their excursion to Sovereign Hill.

On the 11th of August, the Year 5s, teachers and some parents went to Sovereign Hill to learn more about the Australian Gold Rush. We watched how they purify gold by melting it and turning it into gold bars. We saw how candy was made back in the Gold Rush era. We even rolled up our sleeves to pan for gold in the nearby creek. I really liked going underground into the gold mines to experience what it was like to be a gold miner. It was raining and we took shelter indoors at an olden days bowling alley. But my favourite part of the trip was the gift shop.   Diya H, 5L

11th August was when all the Year 5 went to Sovereign Hill. When we got there it was muddy and raining. We did lots of things like watch gold melt, candy getting made, go to an olden days school, play a mining game, mine for gold and much more. At the end, we all went to the gift shop and bought things with the money we brought. After that we all got onto the bus for an hour and a half to journey back to school.   Kirk A, 5L

On Thursday the 11th of August, we went to Sovereign Hill to experience the history of Australia. We did lots of fun activities like visit an old school, watch gold melt and watch candy being made. We also took a tour of an underground mine and pan for gold. I was a scammer in the Olden Day game of mining.   Alex Y, 5R

The Year 5s were all very excited when we found out that we were going to Sovereign Hill as part of our excursion. We have been studying about the Australian Gold Rush this term. My favourite part of the trip was the lolly making show. We got to sample the lollies after it was made. It was yummy! I also enjoyed watching gold being melted into gold bars.   Noah N, 5R

Sovereign Hill was amazing! My highlight was going shopping in the olden day shops. I bought a clown on a stick. I also enjoyed watching the lolly making demonstration and watching someone melt gold. The mine tour was spooky and the gold fever game was so much fun. The only thing I didn’t like was the RAIN! Panning in the pouring rain was so cold. If it didn’t rain, I would have loved the whole thing.   Ruby L, 5U

The Sovereign Hill excursion was very fun. I liked the gift shop, the mine tour and everything else there. Watching the person smelt the gold was really exciting. I also liked watching the acid drop lollies being made. It was an action-packed day even though it rained for most of it.   Ashley D, 5U

I had a ball at Sovereign Hill! There were so many fun activities to do and there was something there that everyone could enjoy. I wish I can go back some time.   Maya P, 5U

Living Wax Museum

Year 5 students have been working on their Living Wax Museum presentations, researching someone who lived during the gold rush period. This project specifically addresses the skills of exploring the role that a significant individual or group played in shaping the Australian colonies and sequencing information and events in a person’s life. Students will present their inquiry findings in an oral presentation as if they were a living ‘waxwork’ figure of their chosen person in the Australian Gold Rush Living Wax Museum on Tuesday 13 September in the School Hall. We hope to share the presentation with other year levels and invite families to attend; more details soon.
