House Athletics Carnival

A reminder that the House Athletics Carnival will be held on Tue 9 August. This is a whole school event so get your House Colours ready and keep an eye on Teams and Compass for more information closer to the date.

Cross Country

Towards the end of Term 3 and beginning of Term 4, the Regional and State Cross Country were held on the lovely but muddy Yarra Valley Racecourse. For the first time ever, Wantirna had 42 (!!) talented runners make it past Division level to compete in the Regional Race (level 3/4) and a further record breaking 5 competitors make it through to the State Final - the highest possible level!

The Wantirna Community are beyond proud of the dedication these participants have shown to progress through to this level and we highly commend them for these achievements.

Congratulations to the following students who made it through to the Regional Competition:

EMR Boys Netball

On Monday 25th July, three highly skilled teams of netballers visited Waverley Netball Centre for a day of fierce competition. Wantirna College was proudly represented by the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Boys Netball Teams at the Regional Netball CompetitionAll teams worked as hard as they could throughout the day to achieve as many wins as possible.

The Intermediate team worked extremely hard throughout the day and narrowly missed out on finals, finishing third on the ladder in their pool. The Junior team fought their way to the first round of finals, sadly going down to Blackburn by only 2 goals.

The major success of the tournament was the Senior Team, who played in a number of heart-stopping close games throughout the day. The team JUST made finals, finishing second in their pool on percentage. The team met Lilydale in the semi-final, winning a nail biting match by 1 point. The boys met Norwood for the second time in the grand final, finishing off the day with a victory of 8 goals.

Congratulations to all teams who competed on the day! Best of luck to our Senior Team who will be competing at the State Competition on the 29th of August.

A massive thank you goes out to both our staff coaches – Janelle Hillebrand, Tess Murnane and Bonita Gu-Yang who gave up their lunchtimes and days to train and coach these boys and our student coaches – Jezyln Paton-Tauali, Laura Hutchens, Mikayla Blias and Taya Hayes. These days would not go ahead without your dedication to the teams!

EMR Senior Boys AFL

On the first day back of school this term, Mr Matthew Burleigh and Mr Stuart Horner took out a ferocious team of Senior Boys to compete in the EMR AFL competition.

The team played Brentwood, Norwood and Heathmont and despite putting up a brave fight, unfortunately lost all 3 games.

Mr Burleigh and Mr Horner are super proud of the efforts and spirit that the team produced and couldn’t have asked for a better bunch of guys to take out on sport.

EMR Badminton

After two years of Covid and remote learning this year saw Wantirna represented in the Badminton for the District and winning through to the Eastern Metropolitan Region in three of the four age groups.

Recently the Seniors and Intermediate boys played in this the next level of competition. Each day felt really big but seeing all the people made it exciting there were students and staff that we recognised and reconnected with. The level of competition certainly opened the eyes of our players as they marvelled at the power and technique their opposition possessed.

Although beaten both Wantirna teams were excited to stay and watch the finals and see who would move on to the next level of play. The convener for the event made a special mention with regards to the support and respect that the Wantirna players had. Well done to the Seniors and Intermediates who have played and best of luck to the Year 8’s who will be playing in the next week.
