Student Leadership

In the coming week Mr Sambell and I will be formally launching the Student Leadership preparation and election process. During the course of this term the Year 11 students will be going through the nomination, interview and voting process required to elect their Student Leadership Executive Team for 2023. Year 10 and 11 students will also have the opportunity to nominate and be chosen as one of our 16 House Leaders for 2023.

For you in the home, this would be a good time for parents and guardians to be having conversations in the home encouraging your young person to reflect on what they could offer to their classmates and to the College, as a formal leader in 2023.

ROCKS

As our recent assembly celebration of the pursuit of excellence students were reminded of our School Wide Expectations - ROCKS. As the adult community on campus, we are finding that some students are still finding it difficult to re-adjust to routines that had been embedded prior to lockdowns. Following is an abbreviated version of what students were reminded of.

Respect

  • Yes it's using manners
  • Yes it is wearing your uniform correctly & with pride
  • Yes it is taking care of what you have & those around you

BUT IT IS ALSO

  • not standing by to allow bullies to intimidate others
  • not standing by to let others steal, graffiti, deface these buildings & disrespect this community
  • not standing by to allow hurtful comments of race, religion, gender identity…  to go unchecked

Organisation

  • Yes it is bringing the right books to class & having the right uniform
  • Yes it is arriving to tutor group & to class on time

BUT IT IS ALSO

  • Avoiding distractions in these lessons
  • Completing homework on time
  • Getting into a routine of reading over class notes daily

Collaboration

  • Yes it is working well in group activities
  • Yes it is helping each other at the appropriate times in lessons
  • Yes it is working with teachers & not in opposition to them

BUT IT IS ALSO

  • Checking in with classmates when you have missed a lesson, to see what you have missed
  • Helping each other study for assessments
  • Learning from each other as much as from the teacher

Kindness

  • Yes it is treating others as you would like to be treated
  • Yes it is showing empathy for those who are finding things a bit tough at the moment

BUT IT IS ALSO

  • Smiling & saying hello to each other & to staff when you pass them
  • Not ignoring each other or treating people like they do not exist; like they mean nothing
  • Seeing Jesus in the eyes of each other human being

Safety

  • Yes it is being orderly at the bus stops & around cars at drop off
  • Yes it is not throwing things in the classroom or stopping others from learning

BUT IT IS ALSO

  • not standing by allowing 'put downs' of those who have a different opinion to yours
  • Allowing each person to share their own story with confidence and free from the potential of ridicule or put downs

While the vast majority of our community live out these expectations daily, we believe it is important that students are reminded from time to time that all at St Peter's College are held to a high account ~ For them and for our community.
