Religious Dimension

An exercise to develop a contemporary understanding of the scripture.

I’d like to share an activity with you all that was presented to me at a recent Professional Development day that I attended.

It was intended to bring to light how we as teachers could introduce scripture to our students. I encourage you to have a go yourselves.

1. Read the scripture below a few times.

2. Choose an image.

3. What does the scripture mean to you and how is it related to your chosen photograph?

4. How do I encounter this?

5. What questions does this raise for me?

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Mt 6:19-21

Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moths and woodworms destroy them and thieves can break in and steal. But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor woodworms destroy them and thieves cannot break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

By tapping into your own and others’ life experiences, you are developing a contemporary understanding of the scripture.
