SLA News

What a busy couple of weeks we’ve had! SLA students have been developing computational thinking skills with Scratch and Makey Makey. In LLF they have learned about digital systems and basic circuits through hands-on learning with a microprocessor called Makey Makey connected to their device and controlled by the students. They have experimented with a variety of conductive materials including themselves as conductors of an electrical signal. Students had an ‘Aha!’ moment when they realised that energy passes through them by holding hands. They created a circuit breaker by disengaging their hands.
Constance, Melena, Zara, Jess and Emily are immersed in STEM! The girls are engaged with hands-on learning creating a game console connected to their microprocessor and hardware device controlled by block coded instructions created by students inside Scratch software.
Sienna E, Reuben, Ria and Ava use conducting materials such as lead, salty play dough and aluminium to test the conductivity of their materials.
AFL Skills
The footy team have been working with Xavier and James every Tuesday to develop their AFL skills for interschool sports. The boys are from the Parade Sports Academy and have been working on skills development training with the football team. The students practise a skill and then use the skill within a game to prepare them for interschool sport on Fridays.
Express Yourself
On Thursday 19th May, the students from MLA & SLA were joined by Hip Hop artists from Express Yourself, for an interactive musical experience and performance. Students contributed to lyric writing, freestyling and hip hop sounds at the deck - ending the day on their feet, with Reservoir's longest ever conga line! It was great to see students get involved and express themselves confidently and creatively. Students were forthcoming with positive feedback to the artists, who in turn were really impressed with how the students held themselves, put themselves forward and encouraged each other.
