Caring For Our Common Home

LLF - Fast Fashion

In MLA this term we have been learning about our responsibility to care for our Common Home, the planet we all share. We have discovered many issues around waste including Fast Fashion, which is cheaply made clothing that has a short usage and is sent to landfill or dumped in charity bins in our community.

As part of our action to be Stewards of Creation we have encouraged students to bring items to school that are not suitable for donation.

We have investigated the problems connected to Fast Fashion and examined the types of fibres used to make them and places where they are made. Students read labels on clothing items and identified the synthetic and natural fibres they are made from.

They have considered possible solutions to reduce clothing waste and created designs that would recycle the materials they have collected.  Students demonstrated creativity by drawing and labelling their designs.

We are now beginning to put some of our ideas into action. One example of a student design is to crochet t-shirt material strips into a floor mat.
