Term  2

National Reconciliation Week is celebrated from the 27th of May to the 3rd of June. The theme for this year is, “Be Brave. Make Change.” This is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and governments—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

To celebrate this significant event, our staff and students at both the Watsonia and Bundoora campuses participated in a range of activities on Friday 3rd June. At the Watsonia campus students participated in a high energy and engaging incursion, ‘Didgeridoo and Indigenous Games’ where they learnt about the many Aboriginal cultures of Australia through traditional dance, a live didgeridoo performance and storytelling.

At the Bundoora campus, students participated in a range of activities to bring about a better understanding of our history, which is inclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and languages. Elder Alan Harris and his son Tristan Harris were our special guests for the morning. Alan Harris performed an Acknowledgement of Country and spoke to the students about the importance of Reconciliation Week for all Australians.

Our Indigenous students then lead a whole school symbolic 'Reconciliation Walk’ around the school. Students were then treated to a didgeridoo performance from Tristan Harris while our wonderful Year 11/12 students cooked a sausage sizzle for everyone to enjoy.
