Grade 3 excursion to TMAG and the Cenotaph

Celebrations and Commemorations

The Grade 3s have been learning about celebrations and commemorations as part of their Unit of Inquiry. Last Thursday Grade 3s went on an excursion to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. The students explored the Indigenous Australian exhibit, learning about some of our Indigenous cultural heritage and exploring some of their inventive hand-crafted items and beautiful necklaces. At the Medals and Badges display, students searched for familiar symbols and emblems that they had been learning about during this unit. Students looked for their favourite portrait at the Portrait Gallery and discussed the different artist perspectives as some appeared more life like while others seemed to share a story rather than just a ‘photo’.

Afterwards students walked to the Queens Domain, where they laid down a class wreath at the Cenotaph. The students prepared the wreath together the day before and attached messages of appreciation to the former soldiers for the sacrifices they made to protect our country and freedom. We had a time of prayer and reflection together as a class. We also prayed for peace to be restored to Ukraine. This was a meaningful opportunity for students to commemorate firsthand.
